LED-Wiz ver 2 wiring question Help.. Confused..
« on: March 15, 2011, 09:04:52 pm »
I am in the process of preparing my control panel and want to make sure that i have the wiring for the electric ice buttons and the LED-Wiz's down before i start.

I have seen lots of notes on the older versions of the LED -wiz but not to much reflecting the new version

2 Led-Wiz modules
External Power supply ( from GGG)
Electric Ice Buttons with the RGB Drives.

So if i have this right.

Red strip on the RGB Drive is the 5 volt

The 3 wires from each RGB go into a #'d input 1-32 on each unit
Ground from the power supply goes to the GND connector near the USB connector

Now heres where i get a little bit confused with regards to the Bank Selector 1-8 9-16 etc.. Should i be putting a 5 volt wiring from the power supply into the first and then jumpering each one together..  and then  connecting all of my red stripes to that same set of wires..

Or should i just bypass those bank selectors completely and wire the 5 volts into a terminal block .. connect all the red wires from each unit into that terminal blocks and then just hook up USB to each LED-Wiz to provide them with power etc.

You generally only need to mess with the bank voltage select if you are driving more LEDs (or bigger LEDS with more current draw) than what a bus powered usb device to deliver.

For a bus powered LED wiz, that means about 450ma. So if each LED you connect draws 20ma, that'd be 32x20, or 640ma, which means you'd overdrive the usb power and likely cause the LEDWiz to stop working if you powered all LEDS on it simultaneously.

In that case, you'd connect your external 5v supply to the Bank select, then jumper to the other 3 bank selects, Connect GND from PS to GND on LEDWiz and NOT connect the 5v on the LED wiz to anything.

But check the LEDWiz instructs for more specifics. It's possible some of the details have changed since I got mine...

A little of both.  It's probably not necessary to use the bank voltage select terminals if just controlling LEDs, all set up for the same voltage.  But ideally, 5v from the power supply to, and daisy-chained through each of the voltage select terminals, and from there to your terminal block, or whatever you wish to use to tie all of the +5v (red marked wires) together.

Email me if you still need help.
