Custom Golden Tee Cabinet Help
« on: March 15, 2011, 01:58:33 pm »
I'm interested in building a custom cabinet for golden tee and I'm wondering what all is involved or if it is even possible for what I have in mind.

I've researched a few motherboards online, along with trackballs and buttons, but I'm wondering what other hardware I'm going to need. I assume I'm going to need some type of power supply. Is the motherboard it's own independent unit?

My main goal is to construct a pedestal that I can hook up to an independent TV with A/V cables.

Any advice would be helpful at this point lol

Depending on what you're going to use for the game, you'll need at least the following:

Some kind of input devices -
Typically a trackball
Some buttons
Optionally coin slots

Something to process the inputs, and run GoldenTee
Option 1:
If its a real GoldenTee, this will be a rather crappy computer, an ancient cdrom drive, and a hardware key.
I can take a picture of an actual machine this week, as I need to repair one ;)

Option 2:
If its not a "real" GoldenTee, then you'll need to have a computer of some sort running either the PC version of GoldenTee, or Mame running GoldenTee.  Note that the current Mame doesn't do newer versions of GoldenTee.

You can take your computer out of its case and mount the motherboard on its own somewhere in your cabinet.
You'll need to put the PSU in the case also to power the motherboard, and any other devices connected to it - eg hard drives etc.

Outputs
You'll need to have some kind of feedback.
This may include sound, and video.  Hopefully both  ::)

So plan on either building in some speakers, and a small amp, and a video device, or video output, so that you can connect a video device.

Basically an arcade machine is either a dedicated unit or a computer which has joysticks and buttons for input.
Theres not much magic involved.

If you're basing off of existing hardware, then you might need to cable things to standards - eg Jamma (which is how most arcade machines are connected), but essentially its something like the above.

What we do is integrate all the components, package it nicely, and then boast about how cool our machine is  ;)

Suggest read the Wiki for starters, then read more of the forum, and then think about what you need to ask about next.

Good luck!

which version of GT where you thinking about... there are about 3 or 4 different boardsets/computers these used and depending on the version you want is what you are going to need.

as for hooking it up to a big screen... the older GT games used an oddball resolution, that is often not supported by newer monitors... i replaced a bum monitor with an LCD not to long ago, and just happened to luck out with the res... 1 out of the 3 monitors i had available wouldn't sync up (displayed out of range message)

Yeah, if this is Golden Tee Fore editions, then it will output in either standard or medium resolution (CGA/EGA). I have found there is a need to purchase a CGA/EGA to VGA to work on the majority of televisions. You may get lucky and be able to change the DIP switch to medium res and plug right into your TV and work. Only time will tell.
