Resolutions, can someone help me out?
« on: March 12, 2011, 05:41:32 pm »
Here's me setup:

Wells d9800
ArcadeVGA 3000
Windows 7 64bit

I've run mamewah's res tool, and most (if not all) the .ini files it creates just says "resolution auto".

The problem I have is that vertical games are huge, they fill the whole screen cutting off the top and bottom.

The other issue I have is that games like mk3 are narrow, and when looking in the .ini file for mk3, the resolution is "auto" when I set it to the proper mk3 res it works fine. Shouldn't mamewah res tool put the actual res in the ini file and not be auto?

Is there a "real" list of "proper" ini files for these games around? Mamewah's tool doesn't seem to be giving me proper resolutions.

Thanks for any help you can provide!!!

-Pete

Use Gavin Bensons AVres instead. There is a tutorial video which covers this and the AVGA here:http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=80229.0 Once rune there will be a folder named ini in your mame folder with a custom ini file for each game that you can then tweak if necessary. There will still be several games that AVRes won't get quite right.

I'm trying to catalog the best alternate resolutions that AVRes doesn't get right as I find them. Here are the one's that I've stumbled upon so far:

Code: [Select]
Game Name                                     Rom Name        Original Res       AVRes          Better Res
Marvel Super Heroes                           msh             384x224            512x288        368x240
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter        mshvsf          384x224            512x288        368x240
Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes      mvscar1         384x224            512x288        368x240
Tumble Pop                                    tumblep         319x240            321x240        320x240

When running avres in windows 7 it just hangs there after pressing the button that's starts the generation.... I'm thinking I need to build a winxp box for avres or something... I'll try this method and post back. I assume your telling me that the ini files avres creates Is different than mamewah res tool?

Thanks,

-Pete

It's going to take AVRes some time to generate all of the ini files depending on the number of roms you have so give it some time. I've had no problems running it in 32-bit Win 7 Pro. I haven't used the mamewah tool before but the AVRes ini files have actual resolutions in them and are editable. Use the suggested settings from the vid link I posted.

Reformatted with 32bit Windows 7 and it works now... That's for the help, AVRes definitely gives better results!

Hi

You need to be using version 1.5 of my AVRes program.  The algorithm has been rewritten and is much better.

You can get it here:

http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=290659&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1

The options I have set in my cab using MAMEUIFX32 are:

Single screen
Standard view
Closest x,y
Horizontal

All the other options are unchecked.
