Thoughtshelp on MAME computer parts
« on: March 10, 2011, 01:50:27 pm »
Since my computer skills are about as good as my 2 year old's, I got a buddy of mine to help me with the computer build and software setup. He recommended the following suggestions for a compact, fast computer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16856176002 + http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820220382 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820233108 Will probably need a USB hub too (2 joysticks, trackball, ipac & keyboard) Am I missing something? Will this be good enough to run MAME and probably put a lot of tunes on it too.Thoughts criticism welcome. Thanks

I would not call it a fast computer.  Actually a bit slow but will work for classic MAME games.  The SSD seems like overkill considering the cost.  If you want to have a good size collection of music or vid then you might want to consider a 2.5 inch sata drive.  500GB will cost you about $60 or less.

it all depends on what kind of games you plan on having on the pc. The Intel atom processor is a very weak processor designed for netbooks. These processors will run the old games like galaga and pacman, but its going to struggle trying to play games like nfl blitz, mace, killer instinct, wargods, and any other high graphic/CHD games. For a mame box you would probably want more storage space over the SSD option. I would get a 500+ gig disk hard drive. Music tends to take up a lot of space and if you plan on running a front-end, those preview videos take up a lot of space as well.  Hope this helps =)
Cabs: Tron, MKII, MK4, KI2, Blitz99, TMNT, Pac-Mania, Defender, Mame Box.
PCBs: MK1, UMK3, Killer Instinct, Area51, Sunset Riders, Pit Fighter, Wargods.
Pins: Bride of PinBot, Attack from Mars, The Shadow

Thanks for the info, on second thought, we are going to just build a tower instead with the following:
ASUS M2N68-AM Socket AM3 Motherboard
Kingston 4 GB DDR3 1333 MHz
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Socket AM3 Boxed Processor
Western Digital 1003FBYX 1 TB SATA Hard Drive
Athenatech A602BS Mid Tower 400 Watt

Better?? Thanks!!

I think that for mame you're good with 2 gig of ram (if you run with seven) or even 1 gig (if you run with Xp).

Myself I got 2 gig of ram with TinyXp running mame, epsxe and N64 games, and it's flawless with a simple sempron processor

Yea, I also want to put Nintendo, Atari and some others on there too, plus a lot of music so 4 gigs should be plenty.
