more reasons to make a xb 360 cab

TMNT 1989 arcade: $2.50 on Xbox Live

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/TMNT-1989-Arcade/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410870

I know people will say, why not just play in mame for free?  But the XB 360 is turning into a pretty good resource for old arcade games.  Its nice to see these old games still being enjoyed.

Anyone know how they handle the 4:3 aspect ratio?  The screen shots look like the cut off the top/bottom so they can avoid the borders on the sides.   :lame:

It's been years, but it most certainly looks that way.

This is what the screen shots look like in my browser (scores cut off):

Just like those Jakk's joysticks ended the days of the $1,200 Ms Pac-Man cabinets, these legal arcade game downloads on the consoles are going to kill the value of MAME cabinets.

Amen Brother. I dont welcome our new 16:9 overlords. What are the OTHER reasons to make an XBOX 360 cab? I have one, and never use it...anyone wanna buy a 360 Kinect and an unopened call of duty?

Not only that.... but how big could the classic arcade game market possibly have been? It's a major undertaking to bring an arcade machine into the house. I would have to imagine that anyone who wants one, has one or has decided to not get one. Financial reasons aren't really valid anymore.

The main reason I am integrating a xb 360 into my cab is to play, what I call the new gen of arcade games. Things like soul caliber, SSFIV, NBA jam, the new mortal kombat, all the shmups, etc... Arcades are more or less dead, for me it's a way to enjoy new games in a semi-arcade setting.

I see it as a good thing for the mame scene, the more people exposed to the classics, the better

I wouldn't solely put a 360 in an arcade machine. The best thing to do is have both a PC for mame games, and a 360 for new-gen games.

A PC running Mame still has the advantage over the 360:
- You are not limited by game choices. on a 360, you're not going to discover hidden gems that were in the arcade. the 360 only releases what they deem as the "popular" titles. Think about the classic fighters like SFIII:Third Strike, or a great shmup like Progear...heck, you can't emulate other systems like the DC for Under Defeat, or Radigy! You are definitely limited.
- You have a custom front-end. the 360 dash sucks compared to Hyperspin, or Mala setups.
- Repairing a PC is much easier than repairing a dead 360.
- If you really want to take advantage of 360 games, you need a widescreen display. Playing vertical games on a widescreen tv really sucks.
- you don't get the coin-up functions you can normally map in mame to a coin-door. Putting a coin into the machine is the real experience. Hearing that "click-clank-shhh-tunk" sound, in conjunction of the in-game credit sound is just amazing.
- creating a control panel that incorporates multiple control schemes (like dual stick shooters for Robotron, or rotary joys, or spinner games) is pretty much fubar'd for a solo 360 setup.
- New gen games that require use of the 360's analog sticks are pretty much out of the question.  I.e. Geometry Wars, Mutant Storm. Best to run those games off the PC. There is currently no good solution for hacking up the analog sticks to be used with a joystick.

IMO, having a 360 as the main driving hardware for a cabinet will only be good when the 360 gets hacked and can run Mame and whatever FE.  and of course, figuring out a way for the analog games (dials, trackballs, etc...)
For now, the only reasons to have a 360 in a cabinet is for SSF4, Pacman CE/CE:DX, and maybe a few other retro-remakes. Galaga Legions can't even be played properly without the analog sticks!

New gen console + PC for mame is the best way to go.

For the record, I have the game on 360 and a wide screen monitor.  It doesn't crop the top and bottom, it stretches to fill the frame.  However in the settings you can use the analog sticks to adjust the stretching in X and Y, so you can change it to pillar box and adjust the aspect ratio yourself.  You can also squeeze it down a bit if needed to deal with overscan.

i've had a 360 cab for a while and it's great for sf4 and i play super meat boy a lot on it.  of course you can play both of those on PC, but I'm not sure if the new MK is going to be on PC.  i have separate cabs for MAME with fairly old pcs now but they run the older mame games fine.

what monitor to put in a xbox 360 cab is an interesting problem.  it's tough to figure out the best lcd to use due to response rate and viewing angles.

There are a ton of arcade-esque games you'd want to play on an Xbox 360, and I dream about putting one in candy cab.

I'm mostly a fighting games and shmups fan so these are the games on the 360 I'd definitely want:

Super Street Fighter IV
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix
Virtual Fighter 5
Deathsmiles
Street Fighter III: Third Strike (coming out later with netplay)
Blaze Blue
Tekken 6
Soul Calibur 5
King of Fighters XIII
Mortal Kombat 9
Final Fight
Pac Man Champion Edition
Shikigami no Shiro III
Senko no Ronde
RAIDEN FIGHTERS ACES
Raiden IV
OtomediusG
Shooting Love. 200X
DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou
Ketsui
Crystal Quest
GALAGA
Time Pilot
Scramble
Heavy Weapon: Atomic Tank
Alien Homind: HD
Jetpac Refuelled
Gyruss
XEVIOUS
Battlestar Galactica
Mutant Storm Empire
OMEGA FIVE
Rez HD
Trigger Heart Exelica
IKARUGA
Shred Nebula
R-Type Dimensions
Metal Slug

Some of these are just emulated, and are even emulated better on PC's, but I'd install them alongside the games that I really want.

If you jtag the console you can get fba next on it which has a bunch of cave games, cps1-2-3, ant more.

Not the same as mame, but if you had a 360 and knew how to jtag, then it may be worth it.

I agree, the new gen of arcade like games is pretty fun.

Just make a control panel that is easy to play on.  Why do we have to cabinet everything?
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Why make a CP when they already have pre -built controllers?  Why do we have to build anything? (sarcasm)

I am utterly appalled that nobody has said Castle Crashers on here. One of the best side scroll beat-em-ups ever (certainly recently). Try it out though, tell me I'm wrong.

scott pilgrim is another good beat 'em up.

Not really arcade .. or maybe it is, but I really am enjoying Limbo.

For what it's worth, I put hacked X360 controls/ PCBs into my mame machine as well to be able to play xbox games on it; for any arcade shmup fan, the xbox 360 is one of if not the best console ever, plus there's a couple of other great arcade-like games (scott pilgrim and castle crashers were already mentioned) available. Personally I wouldn't build a dedicated machine, though; the xbox360 itself, the games and the way its marketed doesn't have much to to with an arcade cab.
