So what are the options for illuminated joysticks
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:13:36 pm »
I am researching controls for my project and I want to go with RGB illuminated controls, the buttons and trackball seem like I have a lot of options, but I am getting confused as to joysticks.

Are there any joysticks available that can be switched from 4/8 way mode from the top that can also have an illuminated handle?  Thanks.

You could go with a U360 from Ultimarc and mod it like Bender did in this thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=108490.0
And with the U360's custom mapping feature you woudn't have to switch a restrictor plate to go from 8-way to 4-way. But if you like the mechanical restiction you can get their new restrictor mount that can be changed from the top.

Paradise Arcade has some illumiated ball tops. I don't know of anyone selling illuminated bat tops. I'd give my left nut for a pair of those old slikstick illuminated bat tops they used to put out.

Has anyone modded an omni-stik prodigy for lighted ball top?  I really like the way those switch from 4-8 way with the lever on top.  It seems Groovy Game Gear is all about the lighted controls, it's puzzling the lack of illuminated joysticks..

We have the parts to make these.  The issue we have is the final cost.  We could make them less expensively, and just have a wire hanging out of the bottom like some of the other options out there, but this is really a poor way to do it.  If someone turns the shaft of the stick excessively, it will take a toll on the wiring and could cause a number of issues.  To do it right, there needs to be slip connectors installed, and so forth, which brings the cost way up in terms of both labor and parts required.

But if there is demand, I am happy to offer the more primitive approach, so long as it's understood that the user would need to take this limitation into consideration, and it would be up to him/her to take the responsibility to deal with it accordingly.  So any who would be interested in sticks from GroovyGameGear in this configuration should drop me an email so I can gauge the interest in this type of product.

Thanks,
RandyT
