Touchscreen In Dash Stereo/Touchscreen Jukebox In Car
« on: March 03, 2011, 10:50:48 pm »
Just a question for now but want to get all the thinking out of the way before trying. I was wondering if there was a way to have a flip screen in-dash car stereo installed like this one http://www.lacaraccessories.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=25&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=313&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=64 And being able to hook up a computer to. I figure I could get a computer to fit into a glove box like this one http://www.thebookpc.com/product_info.php/cPath/69/products_id/440. I believe I can get all of those in place my question is. Will I be able to hook up the computer to a source input on the stereo. I think this would be an amazing sound system to have. Instead of having a touchscreen jukebox completely disconnected to the main stereo. Any help would be nice thank you.

I'd imagine so, though you may end up having to get an adapter to go from the computer video OUT to the screen video IN.

I'd google the particular make of player and see if it has external inputs. Most high end units like that do. Some might even do HDMI.

I have found a couple headunits that do support HDMI. Good news to me. Second question is the power to the computer I'm new to the whole wiring business but the question is what would be the best way to run power to the computer. I know on the back of a headunit there is a power cord that turns the radio on when car is on and a power that is always on that keeps the memory on the headunit i.e. the channels preset and what not. What would be the best way to do it. I would rather not turn on the computer and then even having to shut it down ever time I'm driving. Another question I have a bunch of music would i be able to run a external hard drive. Plus how much power would this draw form the battery. Second can you think of any other place to put the computer to keep it safe and dry and running. I'm thinking the computer in the glove box would be a waste of space.

why not just get a head unit that reads off a hard drive, those were the big craze a few years ago, i still see them as well as those that read off USB drives... i think adding a Touch Screen style Head Unit unless your vehicle comes with one...

I mounted my MoBo in the dash... had to man-handle some extra space with my trusty Dremel to make everything fit.

As far as the power supply goes, went with the M2-ATX.

Just moved the factory radio down by the stickshift... that was so I didn't have to power up the PC every time I started up my truck. Also, since the original radio is still intact, I can still turn it up and down with the volume and play the radio and cd's on the fly. I used an auxiliary adapter that plugs into the back of the radio (into the cd changer slot).

Cool!  That looks like a lot like my father inlaw's Tacoma dash...but maybe yours is a more recent year.

Thanks...
Mine's a 2006 Tacoma.

Seriously, your friends will drool when they see your car pc... especially when you stop, reach into your middle console, grab your old school controller, and start playing tetris!  ;)

Ya, his is an '05. We've inherited it after his passing. I've got no plans to mod it though :)  We'll likely just get it cleaned up and detailed now that the snows are melting, then sell it this spring or summer.

Oops, that was way O.T.
