Best light-gun for LCD screens (PC)
« on: February 24, 2011, 05:42:27 pm »
Title says it all really, can anyone suggest the best light-gun for use on an LCD screen? I've been looking at the EMS TopGun 2 which looks pretty good, and is the kind of thing that I am after - anyone got any experience of using one? Anything better around?

I will be using it on my 32inch LCD TV, and may even use on in a future arcade project too. I hope to play some of the old Time Crisis games, and other similar on rails FPS games.

So, any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jamie.

Aimtracks from Ultimarc are the way to go.

Good luck on the rail shooters, unless you plan on playing them from a console.

I have two AimTracks.  They are excellent.  I also have an LCD TopGun which I am looking to trade, if you are interested, in case you want to try that.  Its not bad but I had issues with it, I think, because I have smoked glass in my cab.  I had the same issues with the AimTraks until I moved the LED Module from behind the glass.

^ How much would you want for it? Is it version 1 or 2? The only problem I have is that I am on Windows 7 64bit at the moment, and I don't think 64bit is supported.

I've looked at the AimTrack, and it does look pretty good - I didn't realise that they sold the gun housing too, which is good. It is a lot more expensive though.

I have the topguns,  I'd go with ultimarc instead, I hear they're better.

I was reading in the monitor forum one of our members has the wiimote working as a gun (joystick mode).  There's supposed to be more news about it later on.  I am intrigued.

For their price, EMS Topgun 2 wired version works well. Only letdown is not supported by Cow Hunter and Starsky N Hutch PC and actlabs troubleshooter is need for SEGA light gun games. I think the half price of aimtraks makes nice competition.

I have both, but my money would be on Aimtrak.
The biggest problem I had with EMS Topgun was trying to get the drivers to work properly. Too many versions, and they'd conflict with each other. Hardware not found and all that. Made me nearly go insane, and give up on having a light gun till the Aimtrak. No drivers, just a config tool.

Go with Aimtraks... haven't had any problems with them at all... Time Crisis and Area 51 in MAME work perfectly with them, as well as a ton of other games.

It runs normally. Do you have the rom and CHD file?

Yes. What computer are you running? MAWS has it listed as preliminary with imperfect emulation and imperfect sound. I've never seen it run well in MAME

hmm does anyone know if ultimarc sells a fully assembled gun? From the looks of it they sell the shell and pcb and you assemble it on your own right?

I really like the build quality of the top gun II gun and the recoil feels perfect, I wonder how difficult it would be to gut the topguns and use the ultimarc pcbs instead. Does anyone know if it would be difficult to hook it up so it would still recoil?

Not just yet but there are plans to. We're in talks with Andy and will be testing the Aimtrak soon, and hopefully some of our recommendations (like pre-casing them with pre-programmed button assignments) will get carried forward quickly.

OP, forget the rest and go with Aimtrak for now; we've tried everything else and they're all shite.

Now if only I the time to gut out my topguns and replace with the ultimarc pcb. I really do like the build quality of the topguns, and the recoil is very nice.
