am i forgeting/needing something else??
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:16:48 pm »
ok i want to build a 4 player arcade (i am a carpenter so the whole arcade wont be a problem , the control of the control panel is  a littble bit more :))

first of all im french from quebec, so sometime i might missed some stuff from the guide!!

So before i start the big 4 player mame + console machine , i want to pratice a little (with the same component that i will use for the 4 player cabinet) and build a 1 player control panel for my brother who wont be able to afford a big 4 way player machine !!!

1first question : is there any soldering needed??i have ZERO experience but willing to learn!
2nd question : i dont want glowing change or color change with my led push button !! ok , is it the same to plug led pushbutton as normal (no led) push button !!
3nd question : (which will be ask a 2nd time later in the msg) which kind of wire i need ? i have no idea, and when you dont know nothing about wire they all are the same lol i learn fast and im willing to do the reading !! i just dont want ot make a mistake and order 30-40$ of thing i  wont need/use ever!

joystick : UltraStik 360 Ball Top with USB cable
buttons : Ultralux Chrome Illuminated Pushbuttons. Includes LED ( i dont know what are the essential beside 1p , 1pstart, 7 button for gaming .... probably will check some set up later, for the exit etc etc push button...but since he will play on the cpu screen and will have the keyboard near??? anyway if someone wants to help out and tell me what are the essential button to add , it will be appreciated !
board : ipac2

wire ??? no idea

beside that do i  need anything else?? like i said im a total newbie for making control panel but willing to learn, even if english is not my main language!!!

thank you very much

Welcome to the forums!

Very minimal soldering is required these days. The terminals at the button can be stripped and connectors crimped on. At the other end, you can use screw-down styled terminals, such as those found on I-pacs or KeyWiz'es.

I'm not sure what your second question is, but it sounds like you want stock, non-color-changing illumination. This is easy to obtain by wiring all leds in parallel, supplying a 5v feed to all LEDs, without worrying about lighting controllers.

For wiring, and standard fare, braided/stranded copper core wire will be fine. Preferably something around 18-22awg, for simplicity of crimping connectors.

Dillon mentioned the crimp on connectors...you'll need to match the sizes.  If you are purchasing from Ultimarc, you can purchase the pushbutton connectors.  If I remember correctly, the joystick that I purchased (Mag Stik Plus) had different size connections so you'll want to be sure of what you'll need.

Ultimarc also sells daisy chained wire to be used for grounds.  That's recommended, and you might be able to use the same for the led's.  I'm not positive as I haven't used led buttons.

If you haven't already, checkout slagcoin.com.  You can locate your favorite joystick/button layout, print it to actual size and use it as a template for your button and joystick cuts.

Have you considered a coin door?  You might want illumination down there too.

One last thought...you might want to give your brother at least a 2 player VP.

thnk you both for the reply, it helped a lot !! i had no idea what the crimp/crimping was, and it is extremely important :)

my second quesion was, i want stock led push button! no flashing no color changing etc etc! I  wanted to know i still had to make something else(more wiring for example ) to power the led push button if they wrnt flashing etc etc ...and you answered anyway so thank you !!

my "main" project will have a coin door for sure, but not this one...its only for my brother and he has  small computer desk and will play on his computer screen !!i have to admit that computer screen are starting to get big (he has a 23 inch if i remember well). But this is why he only want a single player control panel , not enough space!

Anyway thankyou very much both of you for the help, i will post pick when its all done if i succeded!!!
