A few questions about bezels...
« on: August 22, 2003, 11:51:22 am »
Hey guys. Recently we started work on a temporary bezel, and i'm not pleased with the results. Since we're building a cabinet from scratch, it seems implausable to create our own bezel that looks anywhere near decent or natural looking. You really need the proper plastic of a bezel.

As you can see, it doesn't really work that well (not completely finished yet though, and the flash makes it look much worse than it is). I think painting it might show some improvement, (and we were planning to cover in the holes/make the inner edges in the bezel out of pine hiding those gaps to the TV, but I'd much rather the real thing, just a matter of finding one in Aus :\

Has anyone been able to pull a homemade one off effectively? I've done a quick search around the place but haven't been able to find anything at all.

I'm been thinking of simply buying a 21" bezel, and then attatching that to my cabinet instead. This would be much easier/better looking. However, i'm not sure if this particular bezel would fit my TV/Monitor. The reason being that it is very old, (early 80's, Dad got it from the bank.) and whilst I'm pretty certain it would, the front is very curved and it doesn't exactly lie flat. I'll post an image of it with the front facia removed to show you essentially what it's like.

Also, my other fear is that since my cabinet is somewhat wide, (around 70cm's, or 27.5 inches) the bezel won't fit (i.e. it would be too small.) If I just stuck some other plastic/thin wood at the side to support it and painted in a similar black to the bezel, it wouldn't be too noticeable would it? I'm thinking of putting smoked plexiglass over the top, but i'm not going to be able to have it too thick. Is thickness really a necessity?

Finally, i'd like to ask if there's anywhere at all I can get my greasy mitts on a 21" Bezel... particularly somewhere in Australia. It appears that Happs Controls have 13", 19" 25" and 27" but not 21"!!! Doh!

I have never seen a 21" monitor bezel before, but many people make their own and have really good results.  Using cardboard, make a few different bezels and see how you like them.  After that, you can make it pretty with wood/router.

Now with cup beer holders!

I attempted to create a custom bezel as well. I ended up using it but putting a happs 19" plastic bezel over it because it just didn't give the look I wanted. The bezel is pretty large actually. My cab is 27" wide and it was just shy of that. When I mounted the lexan over it I simply created a boarder around the entire bezel and it looks pretty good. I did have to make a larger boarder on the bottom because it wasn't quite as tall as I'd have liked but then again I'm using a 19" monitor in a space a 27" could fit in. I'll post some pics in the near future which may help ya out more.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have any pictures/diagrams of how other people created their bezels?

I'm planning on making the inside (to the slope of the TV) with wood, so it doesn't look like there is a gap between the bezel and a TV, but I still don't know if it will look effective enough.

I'm hoping once it's painted black, and has the plexiglass installed it will look much better. If not, I can always make another I suppose.

Another question - I'm going to have to use very thin smoked plexiglass, as there simply isn't enough room for a thick piece. Will a say, 1/8th piece be sufficent enough to create the "smoked" effect and hide the majority of the bezel?

Thanks.
