Help Please
« on: February 13, 2011, 04:42:57 pm »
Hello. I was hoping that someone could give me some help. I finally moved my Mame cabinet after a few years on inactivity. I built it a few years ago. I believe it's Mame32 version 104 and I'm using an Ipac and Optipac I believe. Everything is hooked up and operational, mostly, My problems are:
1-The coin door doesn't register. I believe this is due to the ground wire coming loose but I can't remember what it attaches to.  :-(
2-The trackball doesn't work. However, it did temporary. Could this be attached to the loose ground wire problem, above?
3-My major problem is that some of the buttons aren't registering? Of course they're the main buttons. What I don't understand is if I go into wordpad and push the buttons most of them show the keystroke that it should, but when the games start they don't work. All the buttons are hooked up correctly because they all have shown they're functioning in Wordpad (at some point) so that's not the issue. When I use the keyboard and press the button assigned to the cabinet button (alt, cntl etc...) you can play the game because it performs the in game function (fire, jump, etc.) but the cabinet buttons won't work. Is the keyboard overriding the cabinet button? Does this go back to the loose ground wire? Are the cabinet buttons assigned to multiple functions somehow. I don't know how that would have happened.
If someone could give me some ideas or what to look for I would REALLY appreciate it. I've tried everything I can think of. Thank you.

Follow those ground wires.  Start at the IPAC and go from there.  With a loose or disconnected ground, things can get wacky.

HanoiBoi is right in saying look for a grounding problem.  I wonder could it also be a stuck button maybe? A keyboard would register another press but an ipac wouldn't maybe ?

As far as the buttons working in notepad and not in games, you should definately start up some games and press tab to see if they are configured. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen a Mame cab that was working and then all of the sudden (for different reasons) the buttons will not be configured in a game.

Thanks for the help everyone! I tried attaching the loose ground wire the few places it could have went but nothing seemed to work. The coin door is nice but I'll worry about it later, unless it's effecting everything else. Which it might be. The trackball isn't working either. The player 1 start button seems to want to stick. Maybe that's why it won't work the functions on the Mame main screen/game select screen. The button is registering because it will make a bell tone the first time you press it. Also, it will start the game when you had a coin via the keyboard. What I don't understand is I can play a game fine if it only has one fire button (I tried Time Pilot and Indiana Jones) but if it has more than one it's like the system is registering two buttons at the same time. (I tried Mat Mania and Wrestlefest). I went in the config setup and each button is assigned the proper keystroke (Cntl, alt etc...) but it's acting like it's pressing buttons 1 and 2 at the same time. Is the ground wire causing this? Is the keyboard being plugged in overriding the Ipac? Any suggestions? Thanks again!

If the player one start button sticks none of the other keys will register properly as it is a combo button to get alternate key presses and only sends an output on release.
