Neo Geo..ish Bartop Complete
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:51:40 am »
Finally decided what to do for my second project, first it was a full size cab then a vewlix then a juke then a..... you get the picture. So decided to go down the bartop route again and a Neo Geo just made sense as they are the games my son and I enjoy the most. I won't be in such a rush this time as i still have my original bartop to play, the last one I just wanted to complete so I could start playing as soon as possible.
Anyway I will use MAME to run the games and a stripped out PC for internal components, I already have a 17" monitor I've been saving since I started my last cab.
It will be spray painted red with the Neo Geo logo's sprayed on using stencils.
Still not sure which buttons and joysticks to use but guess I'll worry about that later.
Here is some pics of the full size cardboard template.
and a picture of the completed cab

good start, I got vinyl NeoGeo logos from eccs19 for my 4 slot resto; they were inexpensive and awesome.

Made a start on the wood today, cutting out the sides with my jig and sanding them down also measured out the rest of the pieces but will have to wait till Sunday until I can cut them out because of work commitments  :hissy:
Here is a pic of the sides next to the cardboard template:

Today I decided to get the hardware up and running. I soldered a kettle lead to the PSU and installed windows. I'm giving Windows 7 a go, seems to work fine on my main computer. The only problem I can envision at the moment is trying to shell windows, has anyone had any problems with this or 7 in general? the only emu I can see myself running is MAME. Decided to use a 19" monitor in the cab this is the 17" I was going to use.

Things have started coming together the last couple of days. Ive re-cut the sides a bit bigger for the 19" monitor and screwed the top and bottom into place to better judge were the monitor will sit. I will take it apart again for the painting.
also a cab my son has been working on

I like the Mario one  What's he planning on running in it hardware and software-wise?

Small update. Monitor arrived so I could finish off measuring CP and marquee. Now I need to cut out the keyboard draw and speaker holes I'm just waiting for them to arrive.

So today I've managed to prime and paint the back panel, cut out a power button hole, air vent holes, a hole for a 10cm fan and a space for the PSU. I've also painted the speaker board black I wasn't sure about this but it looks really good (in my humble opinion).
here's a pic:

Can't decide what colour CP to use the traditional one or the black one. Part of me thinks keep it as original as possible but the other part tells me it's not original so go with what you like.  :banghead:

The original speaker panel was black and the control panel was red with white stripes on a black background. If you want that Neo-Geo style (and it's going great so far IMHO), you should pick the one with the white stripes.

Now I've fitted the speakers and attached the speaker console to the rest of the cab. Attached the front panel with a piano hinge to get access to the amp,DVD ROM and the keyboard. My original plan was to have the keyboard on some kind of shelf that would pull out but I got a mini bluetooth keyboard and it fits on the front panel itself so guess I'll just velcro it on.

The monitor in the picture above is my spare 17" I fitted the 19" and it didn't come on having not tested it. So I removed the 19" fitted the 17" which I know worked. Then I noticed I'd left out the RAM  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: anyway tested the 19" and it works fine so I'll put it back in soon.

I like the white design better. Don't like the strange letter next to NEO GEO, though. Should this normally be a copyright symbol ;) ? Just thought I'd mention it before you print it.

Result! While building my last bartop I was looking for ways to secure my PSU and HDD and came across "All Round" but couldn't find a UK supplier so used brackets instead, and today I found it while buying something else.

So today I've cut out the plexi for the marquee and control panel. This is a job I've been dreading since I decided to build another cab. My last attempt at cutting plexi didn't go to well (I ended up ruining the control panel and artwork on my original bartop). But this time cut like a dream I think going with 3mm over 1mm helped. Anyway I've printed a mock-up marquee and CP and I'm quite pleased with how they look. Still undecided what colour to go with on the artwork  :dizzy: my son likes the black one and I must admit so do I. :embarassed:

I think it looks cool, but it's also like the white is "missing". I hope this makes sense.

I you go with the "black theme", I would make the mini-marquees much smaller with a big black border around each. They should fit (with their borders) within the red area of the marquee. I would also increase the size of the text a little bit.

Over the weekend I managed to finish off this project well 99% anyway. I will take "Yvan 256" advice on the marquee but will have to wait until I get more paper. Pretty happy how the whole thing turned out one day will probably redo the CP as I'm not 100% happy with the button layout. But that will have to wait until after my next project (man this is addictive) Dans Arcade based on the excellent Bella's Arcade by javeryh. Anyway here's the (almost) finished article.;D

Well done. I'm loving it!

Nice flap work!

I must crack on with mine as i'm getting left behind in the little red bar-top world.

Looks nice, clean bright and playable, i'm officially jealous.  :hissy:

Whats your next project?  ;D
