Saint. What about other fixes?
« on: August 20, 2003, 07:48:09 am »
Is there a place to submit other fixes?

like...
The information on the MK64's is outdated (MK40s don't exist anymore, more great features).

Info on Ipacs is VERY outdated.  No mention of other products or usb.

JFront has no descriptions at all...

Links.  1/2 are dead now.

Have you considered having someone take a look at updating them for you?  Or maybe start an official thread for it?

I don't know if it's a time to change issues.  Or a time to find them issues?

Let us know how we can help!

People have done this before, the problem being my time/ability to get to the updates has not been very good lately.

Over the next few months leading up to December holidays, I hope to rectify that.

I'd certainly appreciate any assistance people want to render pointing towards things like you mentioned.  I wouldn't bother with dead links on the examples page, I'll be going over those one by one with information already sent me and/or by looking at each one.

However, moved/dead links elsewhere in the FAQ, missing information (like the 16(!!!) cabinet plan locations I didn't have listed, as well as the MK64 changes and the KeyWiz), wrong information, etc... would be great things to point out to me.

I don't want anyone to go through great efforts, as it's going to be a long process for me to fix them and I can't promise I won't get sidetracked at work.  I also have a baby due in a month, which either will mean more free time when I'm out on Paternity leave, or less if I'm up to my elbows in diapers again :)  However, if things go as I'm anticipating I should be able to do quite a bit of spring cleaning here over the next few months.  Paternity leave, a week of fall break, and December holidays make this upcoming time frame a good time to work on this.

I'm going to sticky this post in case anyone wants to lend a hand.  Thanks!

I try to stay away from HTML.. but have access to some html editors.  Would you like someone to take a look at making some modifications for you?

Here is the first 1/2 of the links page... I will try to look at the second 1/2 tomorrow morning.  I will also try to search on google and see if I can find any of the dead links to see if they just moved.

You may wanna consider dropping links into the message board from other relevant parts of the website. For instance, link the Monitors section with the "Monitor/Video" forum.

I gotta think there's an opensource php/mysql FAQ manager out there that would make this easier (and let you delagate maintenance/topics to different trusted community members)

I started making a copy of byoac's content in automagic faq form but ran out of steam... and wasn't 100% sold on the "style" of presentation/interface...

I got through most of the newbie guide but bogged down a bit when integrating the images (the faq generator didn't like html (it used funny brackets like this board) so I had to hack it so it wouldn't strip it img tags out when entered on the admin panel...

but i digress... I was trying something and it may or may not be useful, but I think the main idea is very valid.  I'd be willing to help with either mediocre "from scratch" coding or package recommendation/implementation/customization...

Saint.  How do you feel about changing the system?

It would be sweet if it was easy to modify.  It would also be nice if it was a real database (where we can give rights to modify it to some who are willing and with time).

It would also be nice if you could give rights to specific database rows (not usually something that is easy) so that you could give Howard the ability to update his software entries (and only his) and Peter his, ect.  So you don't have to have someone updated it directly... But this seems like it probably isnt worth the time...

For my own former site, I was updating using straight HTML.  What a pain that was.

After I started my own server (RIP) I was using the B2 package from CafeLog.  Very powerful little free piece of software.

Alas, now Adelphia has blocked the port, and the guy that's currently giving me webspace isnt' being helpful at all in migrating the databases.  So my site has reverted to the 'old' site, totally incomplete, and hand-updated.
