Possible Touchscreen Solution

I've been thinking of building a jukebox for some time now and was looking at ELO touch screens. Mentioning this to a friend he said I could have his HP Touchsmart IQ790 as it's got a (common) video card fault. Has anyone had any experience with these, will I be able to use this screen with a different motherboard, will the touchscreen work and can I wire this up to ATX PSU. Any advice welcome.

According to the spec the HP PC you listed uses an ASUS A8SN-CF motherboard.   This is a custom made motherboard for its notebook line of PCs.   So a regular MB will probably not fit.  I found no specs for the Monitor portion other than its resolution so do not know how it interfaces.   If it interfaces like a notebook PC screen does it probably cannot be used separately but notebooks also have monitor ports so it might also interface like a normal monitor.   Do some more searching on the motherboard A8SN-CF and you might find out.

Yeah but the monitor ports on a notebook are for OUTPUT not INPUT. o.O

A couple of years ago a local shop was selling the straight LCD panels in sizes from 9" up 15" for about a $1 an inch. I wanted to see what it entailed to interface these LCD panels to a PC and came across a website of someone who did just that. Hackaday features a lot of 1 to 2 inch panel hacks so I figured it wasn't too hard right? I was way off base, the larger panels employ some serious voodoo ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

The guy basically designs and constructs an entire LCD controller from scratch just to interface to the LCD panel. Given the time and expense involved he made it very clear it would have been faster and cheaper to buy a whole new panel with the controller already inside. Has that changed in the past two years? Not likely.

Go ahead and get the panel then do the research. Worst that can happen is you would come to the same conclusion I did.

Having looked into this a little more I've realised its was more trouble than it's worth. So I've removed the video card baked it (a friend fixes X-boxes) and applied compound seems to be running fine now. Time will tell. Thanks for the replies anyway.

Yes what I meant is the notebook can feed the monitor if they are using the regular output port.  The touchscreen is almost always usb or ps2 like a touchpad for input.
