My work in progress layout
« on: January 11, 2011, 03:39:14 pm »
Hello,

Just thought I'd share some pictures of the layout I'm working on for my future cab,  I still have a lot to do as I want to include a few more genres such as 'shoot 'em ups' and  'Maze games' as well as a favourites and misc category.

The actual resolution of the layout is 1024x768, the screenshots here are only 640x480 but give an idea of how it looks.  The joysticks at the bottom are inspired by hyperspin (Drawn myself though, not copied) and are animated using a gif with Video2.  I've done most of the layout work for the game selection screens but I'm still working on the genre select screen, I'm nearly happy with the way the genre screen looks but it's still in the concept stage and it hasn't reached the layout editor yet.

17/01/2011 added previews for 'shoot em up', 'Maze game' and 'Run n gun'

That looks great, I love the idea of the animated joysticks (like hyperspin)!
Thinking of sharing?  I could really use something like that for my layout!

Thanks for the replies everyone, as soon as its all finished I'll make it available for those who would like to use it.

Hi FlatEarth, as I said above I'll be releasing the layout but if it's just the animated joystick you want for a layout you're designing it won't be much use as it has a background matching my layout to give a smooth antialiased effect.
Animated gifs don't support transparency in Mala so the animation has to be created specifically to match the layout it's intended for.  I'm sure I'd be able to help you out and make a joystick gif for your layout though if that's what you wanted.

Great layouts dude!  Good job!  While the look and feel don't quite match my cabinet, just the general idea of how you have it laid out gives me some ideas for how to make some layouts in the future!

Out of curiosity, what type of file is the animated joystick picture?  And what program do you use to edit it?   And is it set up in a way so that the background is a "layer" that one could easily change?  Or not really?

Hello, just added previews of some new layouts for 'shoot em up', 'Maze game' and 'run n gun' to the first post (with the other previews.)

Out of curiosity, what type of file is the animated joystick picture?  And what program do you use to edit it?   And is it set up in a way so that the background is a "layer" that one could easily change?  Or not really?

Hi Markronz, at the moment I have them in photoshop so the background is on a separate layer.  I'm going to do another animation with bat top sticks as that's probably what I'll have in my cab and then I'll see about releasing a pack of a few different joystick animations for people to use in their own layouts.  I'll probably do them in Gimp format as its freely available for anyone so then those who don't have photoshop won't be left out.

I've attached my current gif below so you can see how it looks, I've also been experimenting with having the arrows moving along with the sticks.

Hi
I'm doing a layout similar to yours.
How do you set the images in the menu? I can't do that with the lastest Mala.
Also, I see that you have the list items with distance 0 between items but in the selected item you have a gap between this item and the previous and next items, how do you set this?.
