PGA golf computer
« on: January 06, 2011, 10:08:04 am »
i have a PGA golf computer that's been giving me nothing but issues... constantly having to reinstall the OS, freezing and the like... tried new ram, new hard drives, and power supplies.

has anyone tried switching out the board with something new?

It's running some form of winXP embedded so i'm thinking it possible, i might be able to install on a new computer and dump the game to the OS to install any drivers.. but not too sure. I believe it's running a P4 probably 2ghz with 512mb ram.

i'd like to just put a brand new board in there and be done with this one.

I'm in a similar position

Did you have the recovery disc?

i didn't. i ended up just reinitialize it over again. still had issues with freezing and whatnot. currently it's sitting on a shelf. i have neither the time nor energy to put into it.

ive heard some stories of people just throwing in a new board and re-installing and having it work.

i tried as a test a dell p4 3ghz just swapping the drive over. it seemed to boot okay and begin loading but got hung up on doing some file tests at boot. must have been freaking out cause of the drastic change in hardware.

i do believe that if i just re-installed with the new hardware, it could work okay.

i also did some poking around in the OS (stripped down windows xp embedded.) if you plug in a keyboard and hit "ctrl+alt+del" you can dump the game and get to a desktop. you should be able to get in and install some of the drivers you might need to run the new hardware if there is an issue. standard windows xp drivers will work.

it's not a cut and dry solution, and it's a bit of a rig job, but it might be worth the effort.

it just ended up being cheaper, easier and faster for us to shelf it and turn the cabinet into a golden tee with a kit, than to pay me hours and hours of time trying to fix it.

i hope this info helps.

yes they run on striped down xp >xpe<
enbetted system, yes the hardware change will give it a lolo of a headache
for starters the vid card must b the exact same
next even though it is xpe it is navtive linux also

a easy way to tell what is going on is this
if it come's out of :os: boot then the hd is in all perty good shape.digitiatizing is a sign the
video card is going south, also these thing's need a stable p.s. of some power 450watt-min
then u also need to make sure the fan's are in good order

pga come's native with 3 res disk's
1 main for hd over-lay
2 for game
exactley whom built it ? and what exact model is it ?
ie gobalvr or It ?
i have all the res disk's
and am doing hd mapping right now as we speak

Not necessarily a PGA Golf specific troubleshooting technique, but here goes:

Any PC based arcade machine that has this issue (and you are absolutely sure it's not the HDD, PS, or RAM) may be freezing due to a failing GPU fan or bad(bulging) caps on the motherboard.  I have seen this happen on several machines, so I would definitely start there.  Your main CPU may not be cooling correctly due to not being seated properly or having enough thermal grease.  Even a bad cap on your video card could be a culprit.  These things can all cause freezing/restarting.  Also, adding extra cooling fans to your case will prolong the life of your machine.
It doesn't matter if you win or lose....it's how you play the videogame.

yes correct
i have also added to every pga/gt-golf's a fan on the video-board to prolong the life
also watch the out-put watt's of the power supply
450watt is best
350 is ok for testing, but on a 24-7 machine i would up it
also on a side note here the 1's i find failing the most is gt-complete and also teen-challange
