My cab is up!
« on: August 17, 2003, 06:59:16 pm »

Ok, so last week I moved out of my apt. and started full scale cab work to get this sucker done, so I took a vow of BYOAC silence for a while.  Now my cab's up and running!  I'll post pics later!

One thing disappointed me.  My panel is too steep, and it hurts my wrists to punch buttons for more than a few minutes.  I'd estimate it's at about 10 or 15 degrees but I don't have a protractor on me.

Catch number two...  I got Happ Super 8-way sticks, and they are really bouncy.  If I hold one direction and release, it rapidly hits the opposing directions maybe 7 or 8 times.

I also got my coin door and tokens in, with quarter mechs, planning to have a quarter piggy-bank inside, and an optical detector to make the mech give a credit for any coin inserted...   but for some reason the tokens I got don't fall through to the reject bin, they stick in the mech halfway through.  Don't know why, other coins fall through fine.

pics coming soon as I find my camera, in among all my boxes of stuff.

Some people who have used my arcade have said that my cp is not angled enough and it is 10 degrees.  I like it where it is though and plan to keep it there.

Although I might be not understanding what you're saying, I think that my Super's definately do not do that.  They return to the center like they are supposed to.  Are you sure you have them installed right?

I'm pretty sure they are...

They do return to center.  But, if I watch what's really happening, if I say hold the joystick to the right and let go, it goes "boing" a little bit when it returns to center, and pushes left/right/left/right 5 or 6 times before it comes to rest.

EDIT:  hmmm... must remember to disconnect IPAC if I want to waggle arcade joysticks while I'm posting.   I'm really really hoping I won't have to take the joysticks apart again, because two of them are top-fire-button joysticks and I spent 15 minutes each just getting that little locking ring off the bottom of them.  Could having the cone-shaped piece (that goes on the joystick shaft on the top side of the box) in backwards cause this?

I imagine in Hell, all joysticks are top-fire-button joysticks, and they always have to be dismantled and put back together to play a game...

I know what you are talking about with the "bouncing" of the joystick".  I notice it when my nephews come over to play on my cab and they "bounce" the joystick down in ArcadeOS and it registers a down and then back up.  After I explain to them what happened they don't do it anymore and it works fine.  Its never been a problem in game since everyone seems to keep their hands on the joystick while playing.

Its worth a try to make that change on the cone, if it helps you are in great shape.  If not, then you only lost 5 minutes of your life.

Mine registers 5 to 6 "extra" presses.  Guess it's not normal...   glad I haven't bolted the panel down yet.

I knew a guy who worked in an arcade.  He was always pulling Canadian coins out of the mechs.  Apparently there's something magnetic in the mech that they stick to.  Could this be the problem you're having?

already fixed - it was the fact that the .984 tokens were slightly larger than quarters, and instead of falling out of the mech into the reject bin they just got stuck.  .900 tokens work fine.

Also, I've heard of mechs having a magnet in them to catch steel slugs and the like, so I believe they do have magnets - but it's probably more likely that the canadian coins were just larger.
