Sound thingy

Hey yall,

I've got an idea in mind for a project I'm building (not a cab) and I can't think of the best way to search for what I want.  I figured this board is probably my best bet to get answers.

So here we go...what I want is a small device that will have recorded sound bites on it.  I'd like to have them triggered by either a mechanical switch/lever or an IR eye....the sound bites could be played through a built in speaker or one that is attached through cables/wires.  This should be battery powered.

For the life of me I can't think of a good search term for Google.

I don't mind building from scratch if necessary, but I don't have any experience making ROMs.

Would this device be like one of those talking children's books where you push a button and it says a phrase, and there are a number of different buttons?

That would be a good start...or something like the inside of the talking/music greeting cards maybe.  As long as I could record different sounds...I'd really like it to be able to play more than one thing.

I've been searching more, and I'm starting tho think this is something I'll have to make myself, but I'm going to keep looking.

you could maybe find something built on an Ardunio platform or something?

maybe an atmel? i know the "boxer" punching machines are atmel based and all the sounds are MP3's

How many sound bites do you need? What is the quality needed? Can you just buy a couple cheapo voice recorders (like for memo taking) and hack them to the same audio out? Then just hack the play button to your needed flavor of switch.

That thing is perfect...except for the price.  But at least I now know it exists.

Did you use this one Kevin?  I may see if I can find plans to build one of these.

I've got two of these Radio Shack Recording Modules for just such a (potential) purpose. Only one clip at a time though, but they are cheap.

No, I didn't.
Honestly, I hadn't looked through the page much myself, or at the prices.
Just thought there might be an option for ya amongst the list of stuff they offered.
Other companies sell stuff like this as well, just can't think of any off the top of my head other than Akman. http://www.akman.com/
But at least these things may give you some ideas if nothing else.
