Kind of a dumb amp question, but kind of not...........
« on: December 19, 2010, 08:33:06 pm »
Where would I find an amp that would just power two house speakers?  Like a 2.1 receiver but with only an input from the computer and an output to the speakers?  I feel like this is a stupid question, but yet I don't know what I'm looking for.

This is similar to what I use now, and I would prefer to just have the power it provides:

Thank you for your help!

Several people on the board here have used amps like this

http://www.1010store.com/products/Hi%20Fi%20Audio%20component/NEW%20MINI%20Bose%20Amplifier%20350WX2.html

To power normal speakers from a line input.

I haven't tried one yet. I just used powered computer speakers (some old altec lansings).

Thanks!  I did find a few of these types of amps on Amazon.  Now the next question:

I am trying to power 2 160w Cerwin Vega speakers that are home speakers.  So, if they are 8 ohms, what should I use?  I understand that if I run them in parallel they will be 4ohm, but what will provide the proper power to maximize their functionality?

i am running my juke from an onkyo  reciever , but ill be purchasing a marantz 8004 intergrated amp make sure the amp has pre amp out for your subwoofer , this amp  will power a couple of 1500 speakers . its only rated at 70wpc so not good enough for you , id probably be looking at a power amp with pre amp , any amp will have cd sources etc but you can buy a dac (digital to analougue convertor) which is usb driven ,dacmagic is a very good one i beleive although ive never used one

you should post your questions here or a similar site

Another possibility is to get on Craigslist and find just any ol' receiver/amp. I picked up a pioneer unit for 20$ that even had a remote. The only thing I use it for is to power the speakers on my back patio. I just run a cable from monitor out on my main receiver to one of the inputs on it.

The only downside to that approach is the space a full size receive takes up.
