MAME - Roms running in window
« on: December 18, 2010, 07:07:47 pm »
Hi all

I am just in the process of installing and setting up MAME.

I am running Windows XP pro (SP3), on a P4 2.80, with 1 Gig Ram

I have tried a few versions of MAME from the latest to MAMEUI32, with the same results. All the roms open within a window (That cant be resized) and you can still see the other applications running in the background. I also get an error "Error creating direct sound 88780078"

I have set up mame before, with no issues, but this is a new one on me. Could it be a windows

Im scratching my head, with no idea on how to fix this

Any Ideas ???

Appologies if this has been asked a million times, i have tried searching for days now, but cant find anything

Ian

Have you checked your mame.ini

#
# WINDOWS VIDEO OPTIONS
#
video                     d3d
numscreens                1
window                    1
maximize                  1
keepaspect                1
prescale                  1
effect                    none
waitvsync                 0
syncrefresh               0

If those settings aren't right, things won't work as you might prefer.

"Error creating direct sound" means one of three things.

1.  Your directx install is hosed.  Re-install directx.
2.  Your mame.ini has the wrong directx setting.  8 or 9?  directdraw or direct3d?  These settings depend upon your dx install and your hardware.
3.  Your soundcard drivers are hosed.  Re-install your sound drivers.

Hope that helps.

Weird. I'd tend to go with Howard's suggestion, uninstall anything DirectX and then reinstall (rebooting as you go).

Might to to verify you've got the latest Vid and audio drivers for your system too.

Thanks guys

It was a fresh install of Windows XP, so that may be the cause of the issues

Shame that the PC im setting it up on is not hooked up to the net  :(

I will try my best to get it all updated, and may even delete everything else, and start afresh

Ok, so i have updated Direct X to no avail

Im now considering reinstalling windows, and starting  again. Just dont really have the time at the moment to play around

Im also not using a sound card, just using the on board drivers

Any other ideas ??

Don't misunderstand, but that statement makes me think that maybe the problem might be your lack of knowledge about computers.  If you hear sound then you are using a sound card.  It might be an integrated sound card (which is what it sounds like), it might be an external sound card via usb, but there is a sound card involved somewhere.  And yes, it will need drivers.  Just because sound is coming out doesn't mean the sound card drivers are properly installed btw.  Also remember to check your mame.ini like I suggested.  Just because you have directx installed doesn't mean that mame knows what to do with it.  Especially with crappier, integrated hardware, mame can have issues with directx.

Totally understand Howard, I just havent had the time to update all my drivers yet. Its taking longer as the MAME PC is not hooked up to the net

I may, as i said, format the HD and reinstall Windows and start again from scratch, updating all the drivers first, then add MAME
