Quick help needed
« on: August 16, 2003, 06:04:46 pm »
Here is my situation: I have the power supply mounted under a board which has everything else on it (mobo etc). My power supply cables dont reach the neccessary things: Mobo, Cd-rom etc. What molex connectors do I need to buy? I have an AMD Athalon. Thanks
Derek

You need a 4 pin molex connector where one side is female and one side is male.  Check Radioshack.

An alternative would be to extend the wires yourself.  I think the power supply wire is 18 gauge.

Dont' mess with thta one unless you HAVE to!  You wont find any extension cables I would guess..  Not something people do to often.  Lots of wires... Mess one up and your hosed.  And can you buy the connector piece?  I don't think so.

You might be better off looking at buying a specialty powersupply... But thta might be over 100 or more.

I guess if you have no choice... I would cut one wire, the wirenut it to both sides and go to the next.  IE, don't have the option of messing it up... Take some time, about 40 wire nuts... but doable.

probably better to see about putting the power supply someplace else thought.

My advice would be to mount the PS closer to the MB if your main power cable will not reach.  The drive cables can be extended but the main power cable takes care of very heavy load and could lead to flakey operation if extended with wire connectors or even overheating and damage.

I have a bunch of of 6 inch "Internal PC Power Splitter Y Cables" like the ones in these auctions.  PM me if you want some.  1 would get you 2 power connections @ 6 inches, and 3 would 4 power connections @ 1 foot...

Wait a minute, why not just cut the cables that you have and splice a longer wire to them?

Cause the cable that goes the the mobo has A LOT of cables.......I guess I'll have to move the power supply or something but that means putting a hole in the door so the PS can ventilate, damn.

I dont think you have to worry to much about the ps "ventilating."   I would not cut any hole for the ps.  When you mount it, just make sure the vents and fans are not covered inside of the cab.

Careful, if you buy "4-pin Molex" from a lot of places you end up with a Molex with the 4 pins in a square shape (2x2).  Happened to me.  Then I noticed I'm not sure the connectors in PCs are even Molex...  their pins seem to be different sizes than the molex pins I got. (larger variety.)

I think I'll do what TalkingOcto said, Ill mount the powersupply on the same board as the rest of the comp. components and then ill make sure the PS is not blowing hot air towards the mobo and also not covered....

When you power it up the first time, leave the pc running for an hour or two with all doors shut and then see if the air inside the case is warm.  If it is, you could get a nice quiet 92mm fan and grille, and stick it in the back of the case somewhere.

I have a Panaflo 92mm fan on my processor heatsink, and I can't hear it spinning at all, even with all other fans off.
