Why are betabrites getting harder to find?

Is there a good replacement for the betabrite display?   They used to be available through discount stores.   Now they are only on ebay and sometimes at really high prices.

thought I would check out the Sam's Club website and wow... $490+ and it's not even a Betabrite.
