Woodgrain laminent?
« on: December 10, 2010, 03:45:57 pm »
Any idea where I can find the woodgrain laminent one would see on the old cocktail tables or on an upright like frogger?  Also how would I apply this to my mdf cabinet?

www.vinyldepot.co.uk has a very big catalog that most certainly has what you're looking for. The stuff is self adhesive, and is much like a giant sticker on a roll. This makes it very easy to apply, but also poses some problems... One of those problems is that it can be very tricky to apply the stuff on larger surfaces like the side of a big cabinet or on hard to reach and small places. You get wrinkles, bubbles, missfits,... Another issue with the stuff is that it's not scratchfree... at all... I used my creditcard to apply it to the wood, and even that left scratch marks... Another little issue with it being so thin is that you see EVERY little hump, hole or scratch in your wood. It has a more then decent finish on MDF, but I did have to sand everything a couple times and I made sure that there were no humps or dents on the wood anywhere (and you can STILL notice where I filled the screwholes with woodputty).

So... Conclusion... If you only want to cover the sides of a bartop with it, go for it with caution. Personally I will NEVEREVEREVEREVERINMYLIFE get near that stuff again when I'm building anything bigger then some speakers or a bedside cabinet...

P.S: It will however stick to MDF... IF you wipe it down completely and apply in a dust-free environment ;)

Arcadeshop is now selling the King's Oak Vinyl. It's a bit pricey in my opinion but if you want the real stuff they have it.

I'm planning on using laminate from 3M on my soon to be built coctail cab. I have been recommended the 3M Di-NOC series, you can read more here http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Graphics/Scotchprint/Solutions/Applications/InteriorEnvironments/Di-Noc-Film/

You can special order it from almost any lumberyard, not a cheap project, the last piece I got was 4/8 @ 126.00, double that for a full size
cab, and don"t forget the router/bit glue and roller.
