Compiling MAME 0.140
« on: November 01, 2010, 10:05:08 am »
Hello people, I recently compiled last version of official regular MAME 0.140 with the highscore patch with MAME Compiler 64.
Everything is correct, but when I launch games I still get the "Initializing screen" any suggestions why this happens?
It didn't happen to me in last version I compiled MAME 0.139. All the nag screens were off.

I dont think Initializing is really a nag screen, but I get it too.  Never noticed it before.  How long does it show on the screen, mine is maybe a half a second, if you blink you'll miss it.

Yeah exactly, the screen goes away really quick...but still noticible. Depends on the game though. In games like DonkeyKong won't even show up, others like SF2 will. It depends on how long your computers takes to load the game.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the initalization is there because the point of MAME is to emulate the actual arcade machines, and that is what the actual machines do when you turn them on.  I don't think there is a way to get rid of it, as far as I know its built into the actual ROMS, not like the nag screen

The actual screen we are talking about is a MAME screen, it comes up before the rom is loaded. One thing is the initialize screen from MAME, and another one is the "initializing screens" of each game, where you see a lot of little numbers, roms, etc.
In MAME 0.138, the screen we are talking about didn't show up after compiling.

Yes, I see that. I'll add that to the patch and re-upload the 140 file. It'll be there in the patch for now on. Don't know when that was added to the core...give me a hour or 2 to get it uploaded.

No problem. Download it now and let me know if it looks good. Also, let me know if there are any other 'screens' that are there that shouldn't be. I haven't had much time the past few months to really 'test' anything at all.

Only the "Initializing" with the white borders appears. As far as I'm concerned.

It still does after you downloaded the 'new' patch?

Hi I'm sorry for barging in this thread but my question is related TO COMPILING MAME 0.140 ANY WAY I was able to follow Mr do's dummy instruction so I was able to successfully created the mame.exe how ever in side that folder "mamesrc" that's where the mame.exe is, but unlike Mame ui there are no additional folder like artwork, bkground, icons and so on. My question is do i just copy all of those folder from mame ui and put them inside that source folder,
please help me understands the rest of the process any help would be greatly appreciated. THX

Download the MAME 140 Binary Installer.

Install it to the folder of your choice.

Copy your compiled MAME.exe file into that folder and only the MAME.exe.

If you are using Hi-Score you will need a hi folder and you will also need the hiscore.dat file.  Both the folder and the file need to be in the directory you installed MAME 140.

Google hiscore.dat if you need to find it.

So, install MAME 140, copy over the MAME.exe, create a hi folder, and move over the hiscore.dat file.

I don't wish to hijack the thread but thought this was the best place to post this n00by question about compiling....

If I want to compile a 64bit version of Mame .140 do I actually have to do it on a PC with a 64 bit OS installed? Or can I do it now on my 32 bit OS and then carry it over to my new system when it's ready? I just want to get ahead and have the software ready for the new build if I can.

I compile 32 bit MAME on my 64 bit laptop and it runs awesome!

I don't know the answer to that question though...

You need a 64 bit OS to compile 64 bit mame, unless something's changed in the last couple of versions.

but you do not NEED a 64 bit MAME to use MAME on a 64 bit OS.  32 bit will work fine.
