Considering a driving cab.....
« on: August 15, 2003, 01:24:20 am »
I've been playin' around with the prospect of making a small driving cab with 2 360 degree wheels and 1 270 degree wheel. I have other options though.....

If I go with the rotating panel for my current cab, I will not have room to add the wheels due to the 3 panels being full of other controllers. I could make *attachments* to the panel with the least controlls on it, if needs be.

I also could make everything fit if I make a modular cp design....and I am tempted, however now I have to consider storage of all the modular panels and a universal hot swap setup.

I was just curious to know if anybody else out there has made a dedicated driving cab.  Something small...I've got buds over all the time (including myself...why else would I build another cab)who were big fans of Ivan Stuart's and Danny Sullivan's....not to mention all the other driving titles out there that ate all my quarters as a kid.

I've seen the cocktail version at arcadepinball.com, but I would like to see others if anybody has 'em

This isn't the exact question you've asked, but it's an idea of mine.

People always have to seperate their 360 and 270 degree driving wheels - one uses a spinner-like mechanism, one uses a POT and self-centers.  But then you notice that 270 degree games play fine with a spinner, just no limiting and no self-center.

It may be easier to add 2 360 and 1 270 wheel, but you could really make a wheel that uses a spinner mechanism and has limiting pins that slide in and out of the way, and a self-centering spring that can be unhooked.

It's harder to make and you may not like the idea of unhooking things to switch modes.  Just an idea.
There is SO a spoon.

I made a 360 wheel that inserts through the control panel so that when i want to play some ivan stewarts--i just screw it in and away i go--seems to work okay with games that had original 270 motion too so its good for me.  My next project will be to hack an american speedway cab (has 3 steering wheels set up)--if i can find one that is.

Nice thing about this is that instead of a whole control panel to store i just have the wheel which just sits on top of the cab until needed.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...
