Player 2 Button Problems, please help, going nuts!
« on: November 11, 2010, 01:02:19 pm »
I cant get my damn player 2 buttons to work. I got 1 and 2 working, but the rest wont work at all. I have a jamma harness wired to a JPAC, and last night I attempted to wire the buttons to the JPAC. I successfully got all of player one buttons to work, but I couldnt do the same for player 2. Its a typical 6 button setup. You guys got any suggestions why they wouldnt work? Do I need to configure something somewhere else? I tried going through notepad to see if they actually generated key strokes, but alas I got nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Did you check the ground on your player 2 buttons?   Could you have a break in the GND between P2B2 and P2B3?  Are your grounds daisychained?

Yeah I checked the grounds and everything works. I go into notepad to see if I can get values for the buttons when I press them, and I do, they just dont work in the games. Should I just go into MAME and change the vales to the controls that populate when I hit the buttons in notepad?

Im not too saavy on this, so forgive my retardation.

I was going on the assumption that they did not work at all.   Go into MAME and see what they are set for in the GENERAL settings.

Im sorry, I forgot to edit my original post last night to reflect that they DID generate characters last night in notepad after I reconnected it to the PC. After I did that, it generated the characters.

Thanks BobA I really appreciate you responding to my pleas for help! Its been driving me nuts, this is the last thing I need configured to get my cabinet up and running.

Ok update: I got all the player 2 buttons working by mapping values in MAME. I didn't realize that needed to be done. Problem is I can't get button 3 to work. When I try it in notepad, the value comes up as "q" and that is what it MAME says the 3rd button should be but it doesn't work. Any ideas?! I'm supposed to have a party next wknd and I need this to work!!!  :-\

Need some more info here.  What front end are you using?   What version of mame?

Some frontends have a problem with the 3rd P2 key such as hyperspin.  Apparently hyperlaunch must be disabled for the key to work correctly in MAME.  Just a guess since I don't have the info from you.

I'm using hyperspin as my front end. I changed the JPAC value for p2 B3 to be "n" instead of Q and it worked! The only thing is, when I change it in mame, it doesn't save. I have to change it everytime I start mame. I'm using the mame32 version that came on the project arcade companion cd. I'm a noob I know... I didn't want to update to later versions cause I don't exactly know how etc...

Thanks for your help boba, you're awesome!  :notworthy:
