Yes, everyone with half a brain knew this. (50% of the population, unfortuantely) That flashback wasn't intended to make Shane look more human, it was intended to show that he's both dumb as a box of rocks (he could have took rick with him!) and a coward that panics under pressure.
At least I HOPE that was the intention, because if it wasn't that was some horrible writing there. Thus far the series is going completely off from the comic so I can withdraw my comments about character developement, but the writing seems to be hit and miss. It's like for every brilliant idea they follow it up with a colossal dose of stupidity to cancel it out.
Example: Going to the CDC. Brilliant! They NEVER had a sensible destination to go to in the comics, so this was a nice suprise. And then they ruin it by having everyone inside dead, not by an overthrown facility or outbreak, but by a rash of suicides?? Nah these are scientists man, and hardcore science guys work at that deep in the cdc. They wouldn't give up, they'd keep on working till the end. That and you know, they are frikkin scientists, so they could go get fuel outside or bypass the computer warnings. Also burning an entire facility just because it ran out of fuel is just plain dumb. "Yeah, with have completely sealed off doors to each lab and a computer that's magically able to detect a leak of any kind. No need to just destroy the labs safely... let's just blow the whole place up in a gaint fireball!"
This is one of those shows I'll watch and complain about it at the same time. Then again, by the time the next season is up I might not be interested anymore.
