Will my ATX power this?
« on: November 08, 2010, 06:07:29 am »
I purchased one of these...

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.37690

I have a mini 150w ATX which I'm using to power my PC, 1xhdd, 2 cheap molex fans and one LED button - but I'm wanting to splice a molex splitter cable and take the 12v from it to power the above screen - should it work?

Also, I take it I cut the wire that feeds into the transformer but how many wires should be inside? 1 or 2? If 1, I guess this goes directly to the 12v on the molex, if 2, I guess 12v and ground? Which sounds most likely? and am I right in my thinking?

Also, rather than churn up the power cable, I'm considering finding an old power pack (something like this -)

I have laying about which has the same connector on the end and cutting the plug off and using that to splice to the molex - should this be okay? or might there be issues with polarity or anything else? (or is that dictated by the plug itself?)

Hope this all makes sense! ::) Thanks for any help you guys can offer! :)

The unit that comes with your LCD should have specs printed on it.  I could not read them on the DX page.  That will give you info on how many milliAmps or Amps your screen needs.    Do not replace the power supply from DX with an old wall wart.  It will probably not provide enough power or will be poorly regulated.  The power supply shown on the DX page looks like one of the small switching supplies that they provide for alot of their equipment.  It can provide alot more power than a wall wart.  Small LCDs are usually about 9W so a guess would be that it requires at least 750 mA at 12V. Your ATX supply should be able to power this.

As for the wires there will be either 2 wires or a center conductor and a shield. 12V and ground.  Either your original PS or the LCD itself should show the polarity required for the equipment.  It is usually 12V on the center and GND on the outside.  This can vary so better to find the info on the equipment or meter the plug for polarity.

I cannot tell what the use of the combo cable that you get with your unit.   I assume it is video and power in 1 but cannot be sure without a manual.

Thanks for the info Bob. Much appreciated.

I guess when it arrives I should do a few tests before I start hacking it up - it wasn't particularly cheap and I don't want to hack it all up unless I'm sure it will work! ;)

The combo cable isn't really much concern to me. I believe, looking at the unit, it has more than one input (VGA and some other video connection) - I'm obviously only concerned with the VGA as the project I'm intending to be build is PC-centred.
