Default in-game artwork

Anyone know of a way to specify/force default artwork (.lay) for games or drivers by command line? I'm looking for a way to have multiple games outside of the same parent rom to use the same artwork file? Anyone know?
http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php/Layouts_and_Rendering_for_MAME_Artwork_System
Mame website states you can load art via the command line: "Explicitly specified files (on the command line)"
