i was also wondering abbout just useing a  old PS2 instead.. buting time crisis and doing that.. but then theres that aynoyance that when i die it would jjust let me keep playing,

The coin mech will connect to an encoder to allow Mame to sense the coin insertion.   If the game allows continues with more coins then it will work.  PS2 and other consoles usually only have timed play and not continues since they are not built for coin mechs.

Something like this coin acceptor with adjustable timer can be used to run consoles for a set amount of time.

That timer thing is SWEET! Once I am done with my initial build, maybe I'll build a console based cab with emulators, maybe even actual consoles in it.  You could use this hooked up to a USB hub that has your controls hooked up to it, it would be like a huge PLayChoice cabinet, but wih like TONS of console games! Any ideas on how to make it say "INSERT COIN TO CONTINUE" when the time is up?

Since real consoles do not have anything to say that it would probably take a microprocessor with some custom programming to pause the console and overlay and sync the video.  There are already programs available for various micros to overlay video so some I/O programming for the pause button would be needed.

For emulators it would be much simpler since it is already USB so it can plug into a PC.

Without the actual info on what the USB interface provides to the PC it is hard to give details.  A guess would be that if the coin insert provides the USB port with info and it is transmitted to the PC (depends if this is a key press or ?) this would have to be acquired by a program running on the PC that can output the required dialog to the screen ( Insert Coin to Continue). Since it is time based it may give a signal when the coin is inserted and a countdown as shown on the LEDs. It should have some sort of program provided with it that performs the timer function with the PC as it is supposed to control the pc. Unless someone needs one enough to buy it or has some experience with one we will not know the details. :dizzy:

Found one on ebay with directions on how it is used. Seems like it just controls the USB port power for device plugged into the timer board. Does not look like a good solution as it does not provide info to the PC.

Quote:

this is used for USB device power supply and time control .
can be used with a coin acceptor or other devices that can output pulse signals.

the time can be set by seconds or by minutes.
maximum time :there are 2 version of software

1. 99:00 (minutes:seconds) or

2. 99:00 (hours:minutes)

normally we will ship out 99:00 (minutes:seconds) version.

if you require maximum time 99:00 (hours: minutes) version ,

please let us know before we ship it .

specification

1. Controls USB devices (USB mouse , keyboard ...etc)
2. Suitable for public place location
3. Digital timer: rate adjustable by owner through two simple push button switch;

size :54.30 mm × 91.0 mm

manual:

1.power wire : yellow wire +12V , black wire 0V(ground).

2.signal input : white wire connect to coin acceptor's output or other devices output .

3.connect USB wires to USB devices.

4.set up the time and price for machine to work by pushing buttons s1(+), s2(-), and s3(setup).

Setup process:

1.      Press S3 , into time setup mode , then use s1(+), s2(-), buttons to set up time as you need.

2.      Press S3 for 5 seconds , into price setup mode , then use s1(+), s2(-) to setup up the price value as you need.

For example , If you are using 10cent , 20cent and 50cent coins .we can setup with coin acceptor output as 1 , 2 and 5 pulses . then set up the time (say 10 minutes) and price (say value 5 ) , then when you insert coins and reach total amount 50 cents , the timer board will allow your machine to run for 10 minutes.
