Which one is hot? Which is neutral?
« on: September 28, 2010, 04:03:12 pm »
I'm installing a pigtail into a plug.  Does the big slot on an American plug correspond to the live or the neutral conductor?  Alternatively are live and neutral consistently represented by brass vs. silver screws?  If so which color for which?

Thanks.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe brass is always the hot (black) wire.

Wide blade is the neutral.   If you have colored screws the brass colored screw is for black (hot) and the silver screw is white (neutral)  The green is ground.
