Name games with Mario in it - Ready Go!
« on: September 27, 2010, 01:47:34 pm »
Hi all,

My buddy asked me to do the following:

"Could you build a 2 player standalone that is Mario and Luigi themed...with every Mario / Luigi game you could find out there on the system...Donkey kong..Super Mario...etc...with Mario sticker art on the case? I would want it for the kids for Christmas."

So I think we settled on a cocktail unit (kids can reach it easily and it can support both vertical and horizontal.)

BUT, here's where I need the help of the BYOAC community.  I need a list of games that have Mario in it.  They MUST be in emulators that are playable.  And no playchoice games.  The computer will be an AMD X2 2.6ghz chip (or similar).  I found a list here but I need to know what is currently emulated and works well.  I will add to the list as I get suggestions.

The list so far is as follows:
MAME
Donkey Kong (technically it's Jumpman but close enough)
Donkey Kong Jr.
Donkey Kong III (not Mario but it has Donkey Kong)
Mario Bros

NES
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Wrecking Crew
Punch Out! (Mario is referee)
Donkey Kong Classics
Dr. Mario
Yoshi

SNES
Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario All Stars

Gameboy
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2:  6 Golden Coins
Dr. Mario

Gameboy Advance
Super Mario Advance
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Super Mario Bros. - The Lost Levels

N64
Super Mario 64
Mario Kart
Mario Party
Mario Party 2
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Tennis

Game Cube
Super Mario Sunshine
Mario Party 4
Luigi's Mansion
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Wario World

Wii
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

DS
TBD

Thanks in advance!

Paper Mario for N64
Super Paper Mario for Wii

EDIT: I can't say how well they play. And I see they are on the list you linked to.
I blame you for shouting GO!

Aren't those RPG's?  I'm guessing they are a little too complex for smaller children.

That's a possibility.  Although I was probably going to avoid the pinball genre.  But just in case, any idea what the exact name of the table is and for what system (Visual Pinball)(Future Pinball), etc.

Is Virtual Boy emulated?  Any special hardware needed?

Not sure - didn't see that it had to be emulated games.  I still have my virtual boy somewhere but the stand broke, so it is a pain to try and play.  Added Mario Tennis that I forgot about.

I haven't tried to emulate it before, but thought I saw emulators for it in the past.  No idea how well or if they work.

How about one of the best games for MAME, Super Mario Bros. (it is different than the NES version)

Mario popped up in a lot of places.  You would be very hard pressed to find all of them.

I think even the referee in punch out was marioish....

And no playchoice

I don't know much about playchoice, so I guess this is a dual-purpose question;
Why no playchoice games? Because you'd rather use the console versions?

 :D

I agree with no Playchoice because Playchoice just offers gimped versions of NES games on a timer.
NO MORE!!

Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars is also one of them... But yeah, thats a little too complex for kiddies.

Dont put Yoshis Island on there. The baby version of mario is too freaking annoying. Why have a digital version of a crying kid when you already have real life ones.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

How about you post this MEGA Mario list once you're done?  Personally I'm curious to see the completed list.

Okay this might be a stretch but in the middle of Donkey Kong 64 there is a DK cabinet.  You walk up to the cabinet and you can play the arcade version of DK-- with Mario.

Hotel Mario on the CDI ran pretty well in MESS last time I tested, failing that it runs in the TinyCDI build I posted somewhere deep in my site at the time.  It's actually quite good fun, and a lot closer to a traditional 'Mario' arcade game (think the original Mario Bros) than the likes of Super Mario, even if it's hated by many.

You need the right CHD for it tho.

Ahh really?  You have never played the arcade super mario bros.?   Yes it is quite different.  Much more difficult, and a lot more fun.  If anything I would have that version and not the NES version...
