Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2010
« on: September 21, 2010, 12:37:04 pm »
Hey gaming fans.
I hiked 7 hours over the boarder to go to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo over the weekend and had a great time.
I've always been good at resisting the urge to buy old systems again as I have everything I could want in my cab, but I had an idea.  I am going to make a display cabinet that will hang proudly next to my cab and hold all of my retro-mobilia.  I wanted to see if I could grab the first 2 games I remembered from the 2600, SMS and NES.
When we walked in, my two travelling buddies (who aren't gamers) were amazed at what was there.  Every table was reserved and the freeplay arcade was packed.  Lots of people around milling around the place.  I thought I would have trouble finding some things I wanted but almost everything was there.

I managed to grab: 2600 - combat and haunted House   SMS - Alex kidd miracle world and choplifter  and for the NES I already have my original final fantasy and Zelda.  All boxed.
I also grabbed: 2 original DK card packages (with gum), a bronze 2600 decathlon badge (I originally had gold) megaman and DK energy drinks (taste awful) and a  gameboy tetris cart.  All this will go in my case which will be lit up by my LEDWiz.  Awesome-ness.  Oh, and a moon patrol t-shirt.

The one thing I could not find were boxed Gameboy games.  No one had them or I simply didn't get there early enough.
After that we went to Ground Kontrol and I drank my face off and beat the high score on mario bros.  I almost got the DK high score which was only 46k.  I think my best was 57k.
Anyway, here's some pics.

Awwww!  Darn it, if I knew this was going on I would have definitely driven down there for it!

You're in Van-city right?  You can find those DK and Megaman drinks at that little candy store on West 4th and (about) Arbutus. But yeah, they taste terrible. :lol

I wanna check out Ground Kontrol one of these days as well. I love the concept, bar + arcade (like Barcade in NY)...I'd love to open something like this in Vancouver as I could see it doing really well with the amount of game companies and geek-culture there is here. Hmmm, one day perhaps I'll invest more serious thought into it.

Thanks for the post, and the pics!

Hey opt

You should take the trip next year for sure.  It's a good time.  My non-gaming friends were mesmerized by all the nerds but when I think back I don't think I actually looked at the people there.  Besides the cute Chun-Li and the albino dude....

Vancouver- apparently there's a Japanese-ish/themed store in West downtown that has some of the neat nintendo figures and candy.  I'll find out the name today.
