Arcade Speaker Types
« on: September 19, 2010, 02:21:25 pm »
So I am at the point of installing/replacing the original speaker that was in an old Galaxian cabinet.  It's a 6x9 and lists its impedence at 60 ohms.

My questions are, since I am installing a 60v1 board, does anyone know:

1. what the impedence should be for a new speaker?
2. does it really matter what the ohms are ( 4 or 8 )
3. anyone have any experience installing car speakers for this type of project

Thanks in advance...

From Jammaboards

SPEAKER
Most regular JAMMA arcade games are just fine with a single 8-ohm speaker installed. Some JAMMA+ type games can support Stereo speakers and require an extra cable that connect directly from the arcade board to the left and right 8-ohm speakers.  Usually, the speaker(s) would be mounted above the monitor facing downward towards the player.

Click below to view typical arcade speakers:

On the 60 in 1 boards there can be hum on the jamma speaker connection.   Using an amplified speaker and the sound jack on the board this hum is eliminated.

Thx for the reply.  I read the same info on the Jamma site, but I wanted a local source for buying the actual speakers.  I went through a few vendors and auto parts stores, but I havent found a 8 ohm speaker yet.  Plenty of 4 ohm speakers, no 8s.

Unfortunately, the manual supplied with the 60v1 board does not show a complete connector layout of the board so its a guesstimate on the audio connector.

In the end, I'll probably just get a amplified set of computer speakers and either run the JAMMA harness to that, o play with what I think is the audi port on the board.

I also came across a post earlier that said they simply installed 2 - 4 ohm speakers in series which effectively equalled 1 - 8 ohm speaker.

The normal speaker connection in the jamma harness is L and 10.  An amplified set of speakers plugged into the audio jack on the board is probably a simple way to go.   2 4 ohm speakers in series does equal 8 ohms  just make sure plus goes to minus on the speakers so you are left with one plus and one minus so the speakers will be in phase.

Galaxian was shipped with a 8 ohm 6" by 9" speaker from the factory.

Thx.  Thats the same info I found in the manual.  It would be authentic if I had the original pcbs, but alas I am missing most of the guts.  I ended up buying a pair of amplified speakers for the multicade board - Logitech X-140s.
