Is the ArcadeVGA 3000 a good fit for me
« on: September 15, 2010, 01:01:41 pm »
When I started my MAME cabinet I thought I would be using a TV for the monitor.  So when I put together a computer for it I got a Nvidia graphics card.  As it turned out I lucked into getting a true arcade monitor - Wells Gardner D9200.  I just went with the Nvidia card that I had already purchased but I am now going back and doing some tweaking, updating and upgrading my cabinet and have considered changing out the video card and going with a ArcadeVGA 3000.

I have some questions that I am hoping can be answered here.  I did some searching and reading of posts, but some of them were pretty old and a lot referred to older versions of the card.  I really only have MAME on my cabinet currently, but have considered adding some consoles, most notably the Dreamcast so that I can get a few arcade games that don't play well in MAME - Blitz, Gauntlet Legends, etc.  I am also considering Visual Pinball.

1. Is the AVGA 3000 a good fit for my WG D9200?  I read a long post about how the old card did not do 25 MHz resolutions, has this been fixed or updated?
2. It seems like it comes down to a trade off of better looking MAME games going with the AVGA 3000 or better performance for other emulators with a higher powered D3D video card.  Is this the case or does the AVGA 3000 have enough power and memory to power them as well?
3. How involved will it be to configure all of my MAME games?  Will I need to go into each .ini or can it be done across the board by just turning off hardware stretch?

Mame is truly the reason I put the cabinet together so it does get first priority over other emulators.  I think the Nvidia card that I have now does a good job but I am looking for the best representation that I can get and since I now have a true arcade monitor I want to take full advantage of it.

Any thoughts or opinions on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

any reason why you arent considering a jpac? it will take a 15khz from your nvidia card and run that to the arcade monitor.

Not entirely sure what a JPAC does but I thought it was so you could hook your Jamma cabinet up to a PC.  The cabinet I have is not Jamma, all MAME, PC, MiniPac, USB Joysticks, USB Trackball etc.

I don't think the Nvidia card can output 15khz.

ah. its for connecting jamma cabinet to computer. it does both the controls AND the monitor. so in your case that only does like half of what you need. seems like arcade vga is your only option for the arcade monitor. im not familiar with the different types of that card tho. sorry.
