ELO 1545 Bezel removal
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:19:56 am »
Looked around, didn't see an answer. Here is the question:  I bought a 1545 off of ebay for a flush mount in-wall juke.  It has a black bezel on the screen which measures 15" across.  This bezel has a bunch of holes around the frame and seems to be attached to the screen from the backside.  The 15" is obviously a 1/2" too big to recess in between the studs and therefore sticks out.  Can I remove this bezel?  Does it hold the screen in?  I am going to trim out the frame once I get it in the wall.

p.s.  I know pictures would help, but I just left town and the project is at home.  Hopefully my discription is close enough for you guys to advise.

Thanks,

Aaron

I believe it is integral to holding the touchscreen portion of the monitor in place. See my jukebox build (link in .sig) to see what I ended up doing.

I have a 1545L and was also planning to remove the frame so I could mount it better in my cab and it wasn't quite so big, but after studying it better, I determined that removing it would damage the touchscreen. It's not just a frame/bezel, it's part of the electronic components.
I'd have to study it a bit closer, it might be possible to CAREFULLY cut a small portion off each side, but it would be damgerous to do.
I decided to leave mine on and redesign my mount.

Thanks for the replies.  Looks like I'll leave it.  I'd love to cut it, but I'm not sure the possible damage is worth the gain (although it is tempting).  Really, I'd only need to take 1/4" off of either side to get it between the studs.  At this point it sticks out from the wall 1/2" or so.  I'd need to run a casing along the side to come out flush with the front of the bezel so I can trim it out.  I think it might look weird from the side, but I'm not sure there is any option.

gryhnd: I don't think I have option to replicate your design because you could cut out 15" in your cabinet to get it flush.  I have the studs to worry about.  I think I may steal your bezel idea, once I get the sides, bottom, and top built up to become flush

Could you cut the drywall on top of the wall studs, with a razor knife and insert if from the room side? That would allow you to inset it 3/8" to 5/8" (depending on your wallboard) and trim it out with a frame(?)

MPTech,

That's a good idea.  I'm not sure if it will get me all the way flush, but if not, it'll get me close(r).  Thanks!

I take these apart all of the time, probably completed 20-25 by now. The units with the black bezel (there are at least 2 versions that I have seen) need all of the screws removed from the back side around the screen and touch overlay. Some screws hold the screen to the bezel and some hold little square clips that press the overlay against the bezel. Once all of the screws are out, the monitor body body (screen) can separated and opened like a book towards the side that had the wiring from the overlay. Pop the overlay out of the bezel and lay back onto the screen. At this point the screen and the overlay can be married together with tape, just like the other version. You HAVE to use 3M VHB tape. You will not have a problem with the tape failing. They use this stuff to hold skyscraper windows in place.

Hope that helps.

Is this tape easy to come by?  HD or Lowe's?  Possibly an office supply store?  Also, Does the overlay not need to be in direct contact with the screen?  Does the thickness of the tape cause any adverse effects?  I'd love to see any pics of the bezel removal and the tape application if anybody has them.  Probably too much to ask, but I'll throw it out there.  Thanks, everyone for the thoughts and ideas!
