Newest Project - Xenon
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:02:02 pm »
I picked up a Xenon this weekend.  It's a project,  but the playfield is in good condition overall.  The back glass is perfect... and the cab is in good shape.  It needs an MPU and has blown 2 solenoids so there may be some work there too..

the artwork on the cabinet looks good too.

if you have troubles finding an MPU locally for it, send me a PM and i'll take a look through my graveyard.

Only on virtual pin...

It's old school... but having sold my Lightning,  it was time to replace it with another from that era.

It has a 2-ball multiball mode... is it just real easy to get?

Shoot the tube twice, IIRC.

Enter the top kickout, shoot the ramp/lock ball 1, plunge 2nd ball, enter kickout 2 or 3 times, begin pointless multiball

Not sure... it's the highest ranked pin from the era on Pinside.com... (#34 from the top 100).

The best part of XENON for me is the 1-900 phone number type female voice.

UPDATE:

I received the MPU I picked up from a Canadian friend.  After a few voltage checks I plugged her in and was greeted with lights (some)... score displays (one is messed up) and solenoid sounds!  NICE!   After a few checks of the voltage on the two solenoids that were burned/cut I replaced the pop-bumper coil with success!!  Unfortunately the other solenoid I had for the kick-hole didn't have a sleeve and I didn't have any extras laying around.

The game is functioning great aside from one solenoid... and 1 button.    As for the lamps,  i'd guess about 50% are out and it looks like I have a couple of computer controlled lamps not working correctly... but we'll see once I get the new lamps.  The sockets on this machine absolutely suck.

I figured with the game working it's time to put out the cash to do it right.

I bought 35 blue posts,  new rubber, new lamps,  new lamp "shades", translucent blue flippers, a new tube w/LEDs, etc...

Of course I couldn't get it all at one place.  I have an order in to Marco, Bay Area and Mad Amusements.

UPDATE:  Last night I traced down my two non-working CPU controlled lamps in the playfield to Q25 and Q41 on the lamp driver board.  Upon replacing the two SCR's I am happy to report both lamps are firing as intended.  I also fixed a non-working switch (the wire was compromised about 5" down from the switch).   Finally,  I replaced the Medusa drop targets that were on the pin when I got it with the proper Xenon targets.

Today I will replace the non-matching flipper bats with some nice translucent blue ones I picked up from Bay Area Amusements and I plan on putting a coat or two of wax on her in anticipation of my final "Marco" delivery tomorrow which includes my 30+ blue plastic posts,  rubber kit and solenoid sleeve for the top kick out solenoid I replaced.

I should have this baby up and running this weekend... I do have to take some time to paint the legs as well (they are pretty beat down) and replace the rusty feet.

I am just THRILLED I was able to track down the last of the playfield lamp issues...

(yes...yes...I removed the lamps from the bottom right and cleaned up under there too (after the photo was taken)...)

Here are a few more pix I took last night... new glass is on as I was too lazy to remove it and I sort of liked the reflection in one of the shots.   The blue bulb shot shows the infinity lights pretty good...

Looks good, have you put it on Ebay yet?

Nope.  She's a "keeper"...at least for now.  I only have room for maybe 5 pins and she's an excellent representation of an early 1980's S.S. pin...

Whirlwind is a great "late generation" S.S. pin...

Now I need to get a DMD pin or two and an EM to cover all bases.

:)

The game is fun BTW... sure,  very shallow ruleset,  but still a blast to play...
