My first Craigslist find/win
« on: September 04, 2010, 05:28:26 am »
I have never had any luck when it comes to getting free stuff from Craigslist.  Tonight I got a call from a friend saying that a couple free arcade cabinets were posted on Craigslist and were put out on the curb by the owner for anyone to take.  I hop in the car and make the 20 minute drive and when I get there the cabinets are still standing there!  The cabinets were about 50ft from eachother, but I immediately identified one cabinet as an Original Gorf cabinet and the other looked like it was a fairly beaten and worn, it looked like a Burgertime cabinet.  The BT cabinet was painted all black, lots of water damage on sides of cabinet and had some game called Pairs in it.

The Gorf cabinet had a Time Pilot marquee and Time Pilot PCB.  Both games work according to the poster.  Anyway, after having to wait 40 minutes for a friend to show up about 6 people showed up wanting to take the cabinets.  During that time one group of guys snuck around and grabbed the Pairs game, but I was parked right next to the Time Pilot and wasn't letting it go anywhere.

The Gorf artwork looks near mint.

I'm excited... My son really wants a vertical MAME cabinet and asked if we could do a vertical cab on this one.  However, isn't Gorf cabs on the list of do not maim cabinets?  A quick glance online it appears that it's going to run about $300 to turn this back into a nice condition Gorf.  I'm wondering if it would be worth it to just restore it back to Gorf, sell it, and get a generic vertical cabinet.

Suggestions?

Please dont MAME it!

Its a desirable game to own and a real classic

Im sure you could break it into gorf / timepilot parts and get more than enough cash for an excellent MAME cab.

No outlay for you, no work to do and easy money ;)

I just remembered...  This cabinet is the same as Tron.  I know that Tron's sell for much more than a Gorf.   I know that the Tron parts and boards are going to cost much more than a Gorf.

Would it be wrong to restore to a Tron instead of going back to Gorf?

Close cabinet but not the same.  The Gorf cabinet sides stick out,  Tron does not.
Nice Score!   :applaud:

Perhaps Spyridon's restoration will inspire you?

I had a Gorf cabinet that I had planned to MAME a while back, but then decided to sell instead to someone who was going to restore it.  I didn't have the heart to MAME it.  It was in nice shape too.  It was just missing the monitor and gameboards.

So good choice!  Don't MAME it!

Well, that's not all that needs to be replaced to make it a nice mint Gorf again.  The Joystick is busted and the trigger doesn't seem to work quite well.  Gorf also has lights on the bezel that shows the level.  I need to find/make a wire harness for that if possible, the monitor fades in and out from a little color screen to nothing but white.  I'm assuming that a cap kit will fix this.  I'm guessing about $300 and a little bit of work would get this back to a nice looking Gorf.

MAME it!!!

Realy, unless you have a huge infatuation with it, it is much more useful as a MAME cabinet.   I wouldn't have mine any other way...

Nope, it's going to go back to a restored Gorf and then possibly sell it to someone that would appreciate it..  I already have a 4 player MAME cabinet and a full sized digital pinball.
