Unreal, never thought I'd see one for sale
« on: August 27, 2010, 01:44:42 pm »
There's a Time Traveler for sale in Phoenix and looks to be in good condition no less. I hope someone picks this up.... and asks me to come over for a few games.

I remember seeing one of these in a local arcade sometime in '92. I can recall being pretty impressed with the holographic presentation, but I don't remember actually playing it. The next time I went, it was gone. Awesome find, just wish I could afford it. My mom lives in Phoenix, maybe I can hit her up for this... ;)

I remember that game...

That's probably one you won't see in MAME anytime soon though.   :hissy:
WANTED: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. P.O. Box 322, Oakview, CA 93022. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.

I see a builder's challenge coming...  Any takers?  Anyone?

 ;)

(On another note, anybody got a clip of what gameplay would look like on one of these machines?)

LOL: Ignore me...

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I have a DVD version that plays on a standard DVD player. It's as crappy as the real game was. :lol

It's taking chances like this that made me love Sega. You know, in the way that a boy can love a company that makes entertainment products. Owning one would prove that you have a fierce dedication to the ridiculous and awesome

Bad as it was, it was still better than Holosseum. I remember sinking quarters into it anyway though, just because of the cool hologram effect.

Its probably the same one that was at Gold Mine in Colonnade Mall off 20th street and Camelback.  They had one back in the day and sold off all their machines when they closed down.

Definitely not a good game by most standards, but it was novel and amusing enough for me to plunk quarters into it many times.   I wouldn't mind owning this.  Wish I was local to this seller...

I never felt much love for the other 'regular' Laserdisc offerings anyway; however they were novel in their own way (the way they played) and from a technical point of view I think it was an achievement that gameplay flowed fairly smoothly considering how much work the poor quality discs had to do and the pre-drawn nature of the graphics. They could have ended up very clumsy and not played at all.

Regardless of how it plays, it could be quite rewarding as it's immersive in a way no other machine is. I'm pretty sure I saw someone MAME one of these cabinets a while back (had DK playing on it) . Sacrilige or genius? Normally I'd say the former, but if someone could reverse-engineer some of the classics into layers, could be great for things like Galaga or other 'space shooters' to create an illusion of depth the Virtual Boy epically failed at!

The game displayed could be anything, right? Dragon's Lair, or....

In theory, though of course games with black backgrounds would create a better holographic effect.

DL would look like crap. The screen is reflected off a parabolic mirror.

Pictures are overrated anyway.
