Want to remove monitor == safe?
« on: August 25, 2010, 10:35:03 am »
Greetings,

This is my first post here as I just bought a used SF2 CE Cabinet and I'd like to remove the monitor and the electrical stuff to replace it with a PC screen and hardware.

Here's how it (roughly) look:

Now, I read from left to right and hear from different persons that:
1- You need to discharge the monitor before removing it.
2- You just need to leave it unplugged and you can remove it safely.
3- You can get seriously injured from the shock of a monitor.
4- You'll simply get a bit shocked.

As you can see, these are counter-opinions and being an electrical neophyte, I really don't know what to think or do. All I want is to remove the monitor and dispose of it.

What's your opinion?

It's not about opinions. There are simple facts in this case.

DISCHARGE, wait an hour, DISCHARGE, wait fifteen minutes, DISCHARGE (better safe than sorry - I suggest the third discharge just in case). If the last time, you get no spark, then remove the anode cap and pull out the monitor. It looks like yours has handles on the frame. Use those to remove it.

Number two is the worst advice ever. It's flat out wrong.

if not disconnecting the anode cup , there is no need to discharge the crt.

just DON'T use the anode lead as a carrying strap  ;)

disconnect the rgb/sync/AC leads and pull the whole thing - usually NOT difficult

The anode cup is that thing in top of the tube itself? The thing that covers the hole where you put the screwdriver to discharge?

That's why I wonder why I'd need to discharge my monitor. I simply want to remove it and I don't want to repair it or something like that.

Anyways, I'll get some help from an electrician friend I know.

It's just that I get some much information from both sides (don't worry VS. DEATH Hazard) so I'm a bit confused. ;)

Because it's both ways. "Don't Worry" because it's not as scary as it sounds, but "DEATH Hazard" is also right. You shouldn't worry as long as you do it right, but know what you're doing and be mindful of where your other limbs are when doing it, or you could have a very bad experience.
