it would be far cheaper if you actually bought the likes of that unit outright instead of trying to make it.

but, if your not too pushed on how it'd look overall and dont mind alot of sculpting and sanding, you can
always try making it out of fibreglass. the only catch is, is that you need alot of materials and it can be costly.
plus, if your not used to working with fibreglass its definately going to get messy.

try checking out the 12volt.com , they do alot of car related stuff and will have topics covering the use of glassfibre.
look at some of the ice sections / car audio sections. you will see people making sub boxes and door pods out of the stuff.

other than that , i'd just buy the product you linked to :)

I may be a jackass , but im no fool !

But wear plenty of protection and work outdoors

I don't know why, but when I read your post title, "Cabinet material other than wood...ideas?", I immediately thought of this:

You could try making a cabinet entirely out of glass but you better have your own "hot shop" to do it.  You could try a concrete cabinet but it better be on the lowest floor of your home.  If the concrete cabinet isn't on the lowest floor, it will soon get there under it's own power (you might need to explain why there is a hole in the floor where the cabinet used to be and then patch the hole).  You could try fiberglass but if you are not experienced at working with fiberglass I recommend against try it.  You could try injection molding but this would require specialized equipment and you making mold(s) for the part(s) you want made. You could try making a cabinet out of plexiglass.  If you don't like it, later on down the road you could convert it into a fish tank.  You could try to make a cabinet from bamboo but it might turn out looking like a set piece from Gilligan's Island.  You could make a cabinet out of cake but that has been done already.  Besides you're not supposed to play with your food.  You could try building a cabinet out of cardboard. I have no idea how durable it would be but some places do sell cardboard furniture.  I hope this has given you some ideas for cabinet materials other than wood.

How about a cabinet made entirely of reclaimed and re-purposed materials?

Grab every single bit of 'dead' electronics you can from the curb side and Craigslist and build a cabinet out of nothing but PCBs.

Sounds like once you have a roll of duct tape and a bag of sugru, you don't need anything else...   ;D

I can just see it. A lumpy computer space cabinet  ;)

That would be a fun build though!
