MAME Cabinets that should have been...
« on: August 19, 2010, 11:21:15 pm »
Ok, I'm sitting here trying to come up with various ideas for my cab project, and I thought, "Hey, what if everybody came up with their most amazing/strange/retro/futuristic ideas for themes and shared them!"  So, here we are.

Here are some cabs I was considering:

  • The Fire Engine - high gloss fire engine red, chrome t-molding, and full light-bar on top
  • The Full Metal Jacket - white sides, R. Lee Ermy / Sgt. Hartman on the side, army green t-molding, randomly yells insults at you to make you play in attract mode
  • G-Force Cabs - A full set of 5 cabinets, each dedicated to one Member of the "Battle of the Planets" team (heh, I'm dating myself.)
  • Transformer Cabs - Multiple cabinets in a single room, each 'transforms' into a video game cabinet (i.e. old-style stereo cabinet, fridge, etc.)

So, that's what I came up with over the past little while.  What ideas can you come up with?  (Feel free to work off of others ideas, too!)

It would probably cost a penny, but a steampunk cab would be awesome.  Never seen one.

For those that do not know:

There is also dieselpunk, but I don't like that as much.

Seriously though. I'm completely down with taking old/antique/beat to hell furniture elements and repurposing them into cabs/jukes/etc.

The Gryhnd's rat rod http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=104021.0
is a great example of this. I could see using an old armoire, buffet, coffee table, side table, sofa table, etc. More baroque the better.

Maybe something like the attached...

Also, that whole transformer idea is great. I'd love to see an old school fridge that somehow opened into an arcade cab. It'd take the right house for something like that though.

I used to love that show!

I have contemplated an Iron Giant model I got a neat riveted metal looking skull that lights up could use a topper.

For the right price, you can even have Vin Diesel do the voiceover!  (The 'right price' being dinner, these days.)

: Blush :

At one point this little cabinet came up on Craigslist. It's an old fashioned shaving station with a mirror at the top. I didn't pursue it, so I don't know what its dimensions were, but I always thought it'd be cool to change the mirror for an LCD and MAME it.

That would have been amazing.  I can imagine the build - drilling that oh so delicate hole through the supports to hide the wiring so that it was nigh invisible...  That would have been something to see!  As we speak, I have requested a stereo cabinet from a freecycler in my area, and I'm praying he picks me as the lucky recipient.  I'm dying to see it - for free, I'm not picky - if only to see if it's a resto project or a rejuvenation project (i.e. jukebox possibility).  Fingers crossed!

"Next on Pimp My Ride"

"If this van's a rockin', bring quarters"

"Hey baby, jump in back and check out my joystick"

"No honey, I swear, Cruisi'n World isn't a euphamism..."

I could go on. Sorry, I'm in one of those weird zones I get after pulling an all nighter.

I don't presently have the woodworking skills,
but I've been wanting to make a stand up arcade machine
in the shape of Godzilla.
