Mala set up in windows 7 ultimate
« on: August 19, 2010, 03:54:20 pm »
I was having problems getting mala to start with windows 7 because of the whole permissions and so on. so Here is what i did to slove this and hope it helps you to if you were stuck like me.
Instructions to become permanent admin on windows 7. And to stop mala from giving an error when trying to set it to boot up with windows 7.

1. Open up command prompt
2. type in, net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter
3. now log off and the admin acount should be on the load up screen.
4. log in as admin, when windows starts up close windows media player thats on the task bar.
5. go to user accounts under control panel and remove the other account witch is not the admin account.
6. After I went to C:\users and deleted my other account.
Now everytime windows log in it automaticaly logs in as admin, meaning that when you set mala to start with windows 7 it wont give an error and it will boot on start up. there you go

I tried that but it still would not let mala be set up to start with windows, mala would always give an error and shut down. Idk i might of done it wrong then but this is what worked for me.

Why not just disable UAC?

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/30/how-to-disable-and-turn-off-uac-in-windows-7/

I just follwed those instructions from the above link using Windows 7 Professional And it worked   ;D

As advised, I had to reboot Windows 7 after I made the change.

However, Just to be nice I might change the next version of MaLa to warn of Windows not allowing MaLa to write to the registry rather than shutdown.

Just found this post searching.  Was trying to figure out how to get Mala to start with windows 7.
After reading this I decided to just try to right click my MALA shortcut and select run MALA as administrator THEN enable the start with windows option.

In case it hasn't been covered before, it worked.

The MaLa build envirmoment is now running on Window 7 and I don't have any problems as I am currently running as admin.

I wonder if there is a Windows installer out there that can set the appropriate windows permissions so you don't have to go through that pain. If so I can use it on the next full MaLa release...

Anyone?

I've been running Mala under Win7 for quite some time, and no probs either, but I'm also running as Admin.

Have you checked out InnoSetup? It's free, and has some support for permissions settings.

They also mention using the free SETACL utility to exercise more control over permissions.

I've used Innosetup on some smaller projects and it is quite powerful but easy to get into.

Ta I will give it a whirl and run it on another win7 pc (or vm) on a restricted account

The thing about app installs is that if you don't abide by ms's "suggestions" things will be more tricky.

For instance, ms says to install stuff under \program files\YourApp, but after the install, you aren't allowed to WRITE into the program files folder at all. All prog data should go either in the current user's APPLICATION DATA or the ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA folder. For commercial apps, that makes sense, but for something like Mala, that'd be a bit of a pain. Generally, you want Mala to be installed in a specified folder (say c:\Games\Frontends\Mala) and for all it's config files to be right there in the same folder. Problem is, if the user does that, THEY have to be aware of permissions and be sure to put mala somewhere where it will have correct permissions according to the user's credentials used when Mala is run. For instance, I might install Mala while logged in as "JoeBob", but I plan on using autologin as "Guest" with limited permissions when my cab normally starts because I don't want game players to be able to start up explorer and go traipsing through the filesystem.

To make that seamless for users might take a few minor tweaks to Mala to vector where it's reading and writing it's config files. But then, I might be complicating the issue here. Maybe the common problems are simpler than that?

I'd be happy to help out if you'd like. I've done A LOT of installs over the years, mostly with WISE or Installshield, but I've used InnoSetup a few times too.
