Noob buys jukebox
« on: August 19, 2010, 02:05:27 am »
Hello everyone, I am so glad to be part of this great online community! This is my first post so please bear with me. I was lucky enough to uncover an all-but-forgotten Rowe AMI jukebox recently. Its a 1973 TI-1 "Monte Carlo" in all its gaudy purple disco era glory. It's a cantankerous, cranky, wonderful machine that switches between not functioning at all, to playing all the great classic 45's hidden in its amazing guts. I found it waiting to be discovered on the third floor of a creepy warehouse/storage facility in downtown Calgary Alberta, Canada. I drove 7 hours to retrieve it. It hadn't been plugged in for years. Currently it suffers from the "I play 45's too slow" disorder, but I'm reading all I can about it on this forum and hope to have it figured out soon enough.
Thanks for taking the time to read my first post, and I hope I can contribute helpfully to this forum.

Hello Loadstar,

The Monte Carlo version of the TI-1 looks better than the Deaville and Seville being as it has the lit side panels, on the other versions from this year they just had black or wood effect side panels.

You need to strip down the turntable motor and re lub it, after refitting clean the turntable and idler wheel linkage  and idler wheel in soapy water to remove any trace of oil on the surfaces. re lub the linkage and turntable shaft as per the manual (one spot of oil).
Over in the USA/Canada there is a company that produces a ruber rejuvenator (sorry I can not remember the name of the company, do a search on Google)
The above is not an option if there is a dint or dints in the rubber.

I have new idler wheels in stock.
Contact me off of line if you require one.

Alan, thanks for your advice. I disassembled the turntable and it asscociated drive components including the e-clips and grommets on the motor hangers. I think the rubber on the idler was glazed up from years of use and once I cleaned it, the machine played records at the proper speed. I lubed all of the recommended points with SAE 20 light machine oil, and it seems happier.
Interestingly my Monte Carlo has graphics painted on reverse glass on the end panels, but they don't light up. They're just mounted on blacked out wood.
Here's a link to a short clip of my jukebox in action, before I did any work on it...

Hi Loadstar,

Good to hear that you have sorted out the speed issue.
With regards to your side panels The TI-2 Rhapsody and Caprice have side panels similar to your Monte Carlo. These have cut out panels in the side of the jukebox into which a 110 volt 12 inch fluorescent fitting is fitted.
I suggest that your jukebox could be a Seville or Deaville that had the Monte Carlo panels fitted to it.
I would take off the side panels and cut out apertures to suit a fluorescent fitting it will make a lot of difference to the look of the jukebox.
The side fittings fixed to the R-74 or R-80 would be ideal.
These may be available at www.jukeboxparts.com
