Golden Tee friendly control panels?
« on: August 17, 2010, 06:03:20 pm »
Any pics of multi function GT friendly control panels?

I just mocked one up with my newly acquired trackball, mashed my fingers straight into the spinner after about 10 mins play!

I'm really not sure what would be considered a reasonable compromise between usable and pleasing to look at.

Here is my layout (although not made yet).  The lone red button hole is for the spinner

Mine does not include a spinner, but if I did want to add one to this layout, I'd put it to the right of the trackball, below the Player 2 button layout.
I've only had one person jam their fingers into the bezel glass, but he had a ridiculously exaggerated "swing" in Golden Tee.  Not much you can do to avoid that.

I did the layout EVEGames describes. I can play GT on this machine all day without hitting the sticks, but people first trying it always seem to hit the player 2 stick. Ended up getting a dedicated Golden Tee since the games got so much play in MAME

That looks like a workable solution - Could you measure the gap between trackball and glass for me please?

Thanks!

TOK or EVEGames, how wide are your panels?  this is the same layout i was going to use to avoid putting a huge box on the front of my cabinet.

Chopps,
My panel is exactly 24" wide.  Like you, I prefer a control panel which conforms to the width of the cab.  At 24" wide, it was a very confortable and aestetically pleasing fit for a 21" CRT, and I find 2-player gameplay to be comfortable at that width as well.  It's just the right spacing to be able to throw a quick elbow into your buddy's chest during a game of Track & Field, like on the 100 Meter Dash... On your marks... get set... ::elbow:: / ::starting gun:: and that's how you get a good head start.

We're practically Control Panel twins!
I like your design, man!  And you took the extra step that I wish I had taken back in '04 when I built that first cab; the spinner.  It's funny because you put yours exactly where I would have put mine.

Mine is 21" wide

The distance from tip of trackball to glass is 7.5"

I might move the spinner over to where TOK has his, Ive stacked up some coins there and played as player 2 on the stick - seems like a great location, doesnt interfere with gameplay at all and I didnt knock over the coins!

This is just a rough panel made from scrap wood, Ill make a tidy final one when im 100% happy ;)

My panel is 27.5" wide, 14.5" deep in the middle and the front of the trackball is 9.5" from the marquee.
I experimented with a lot of layouts and this one worked out the best for a do-it-all kind of solution. The bottom row of the player 1 controls is mouse buttons 1 through 3 (Happ trackball with 3 button harness). I originally had a separate set of buttons for the trackball, but wanted to clean the look up as much as possible.
