Has anyone modify there cad?
« on: August 15, 2010, 10:17:18 pm »
I had a party out side for my kids and there friends and i put my arcade machine out side(under roof) so the kids could play.I have had my machine for over 8 months and I didn't  realize how much space it was taking up(so did my girlfriend). So after the party she said she didn't wanted back inside.I don't want to sell it but i think that my girl friend is rite, and i don't have where to put it other than where it was.So my question, have anyone here modify there machine to make it smaller? If so have you used the same part from your machine or started all over?

I'd suggest you start looking for a new girlfriend instead.

ZING!

Or, just cut the bottom part off and make it a bartop... If you have a big enough cabinet, you will proabably have enough material. Then follow one of the many plans on the forums here to re-make it. It will be a challenge, but a fun one.

You are talking about the cabinet, and not the girlfriend, right?

i guess it really depends on the design of your cabinet.  I would think that it would probably be easier to build a new, smaller cabinet than try to modify an existing cabinet.  what is your cabinet like now?  CRT or LCD monitor?   they do take up alot of space, but they are so awesome, it is worth it.  Personally, I say if you want to make it smaller, then do it.  But if you are only doing it because your girlfriend says so, then dont.  if you give her that kind of control now, you don't stand a chance if you get married someday.  i got my first cabinet a week before i proposed (brought it home when she wasn't there, then told her about it), othewise i would have had a much more difficult time getting one.  maybe not though, because i did just manage to talk her into letting my bring a gigantic showcase cabinet home later this week...

to get back on subject, look at some of the examples here, there are tons of examples of bar tops and slim stand up cabinets that dont take alot of room

If my girlfriend said that to me; I'd be single today.  My hobbies are part of me and there should be a willing compromise somewhere.  Tearing it down or modifying my cabs would not be something that I would do.  My cabs live out in the garage, but if I didn't have a garage then I'd have an air conditioned arcade shed out in the back.

Not for nothing, but isn't kinda taking up more room now being in pieces all around.

That cab doesn't look like it would really take to a modification.
You'd probably have to start over with a smaller design like a cocktail or a slim with an LCD.

How strong is the relationship with the girlfriend.
I say stand up to her and tell her........
oh wait I gotta go, my wife just called me.

I've got to agree with this.  You had a really nice looking cabinet and now you don't.  :'(

Your cab isn't really suited for modification anyway, IMO.  If my wife told me to stop with all this arcade madness I'd go bananas.  There are worse hobbies you could have.   :blah: :blah: :blah:

To be fair, we don't know where this cabinet was originally located, do we?  He might not have a basement or garage and might have had it in a bedroom or dining room.

Now I'm all for our s.o.'s letting us "tinker" with this stuff in peace, but seriously, I can imagine that gets annoying for them what with all the dust, wood, grinding and drilling, soldering, and wires everywhere.  I think something that large "invading" your home should definitely be discussed by both parties involved.

I'm assuming the OP doesn't have a man-cave?

When we moved into our place, I couldn't get the cab into the pre-designated back room.   She said she would have lived with it in the living room if we were unable to finally finagle it in by removing the moulding.   There's a girl who understands what's important.   ;)

wow that sucks. should have tried to sell / give away the shell. Monitor looks good, smaller cab= smaller monitor.

Did you play it often?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say he played with his GF more than he played the game...  ...the opposite usually doesn't happen until you get married.

 ;D

Like me.  Oh, wait.

You mean cut off the TOP and make the rest a cocktail.

Seriously though, I'd probably make a deal with her.  Tell her you'll sell it on the condition that you will build a smaller profile one.  You'll probably end up building a nicer one anyway.  It's always better the second time around.

For me, it has a real eastern bloc look to it

You should spray a hammer and scythe on the side of it and call it the Sputnik!

See that photo you posted of the brown shelf partially covered with junk? That's not very effective use of space. Ditch the un-used shelf unit and you now have space for the cabinet, as it was.

Hmm, Well, that stainless clad bartop is interesting. Gotta agree with the "eastern bloc" comment, but, with a little creativity, it could be something decent.

Thing is, if she didn't like the full size cab, is she +really+ going to like a boxy stainless bartop?

the fullsize cab was taking much more space and also now i don't need two guys to move it around.I can now put it in my kids room and bring it out when friends come over.

Thing is that i was going to make it a little rounder using the cnc but when i got to the shop the pc that i use to draw took a dump. All my work for the last 2 years gone, no big deal as we use the cnc to cut cabinet part using kcdw and the few part that are drawn are pretty easy to do.So i had to cut by hand, something that i havn't done in a while.
