New to the forums! Anyone from Belgium here? :D
« on: August 12, 2010, 05:56:45 pm »
Hi guys!

I found this website like  2 weeks ago and I've been on it every day since..
Before I had an interest in building a MAME arcade cabinet already, but the lack of knowledge and experience for the software kind of kept me from really planning anything.

This of course all ended by ending up in this place =)
You guys are awesome, and I can't tell you how much I've already been inspired by these boards and it's great community.

I'm a student doing Industrial Product Design in Belgium so at school we have this giant machine workshop with all the machinery one can ask for, even vacuumform machines and a lasercutter.
And we can buy materials like woodboard or MDF real cheap directly from the school.

So here are the plans for when school starts again :

- Build: 2 Aliens v.s. Predator inspired MAME bartops running on original xboxes (budgetwise they're the best for me I think)
I just think after seeing a lot of MAME games that that is the most badass game out there and theme/art wise you can really make something cool with it.

I think the hardest part for me will be softmodding the xbox'es and hacking xbox controllers and wiring the CP and shiz.. but I hope you guys here will help me out should problems come up down the way.

I'll post some sketches and ideas when I have them, I was just excited to say hi :)

Thanks guys!

Cool to see some more Belgians joining this hobby! When I just started doing my research I spent hours trying to find fellow Belgians to share some knowledge with, but there are little or none around here.

I'm from Leuven, where are you located? Where do you go to school?

When you start work on the cab, don't forget to make a post in the project announcments!

I am wannabe Belg. Near the border, and waiting to jump across anytime in the future. Regular visitor to Leuven, Gent and Antwerp, my shopping cities.

I'm Dutch and plan to stay ;)

Be sure to also visit www.gameroom.be and www.dragonslairsfans.com which are both Belgium based.

Don't get Dragonslairsfans wrong, there's much more general arcade stuff going on there than just laser disc games.

But of course welcome here :)

Welcome to  these forums

Good luck with your bartop project (I'm planning  1 2 for the coming months )

About the software part I would go for a PC setup where you have more control over your front end(ie  hyperspin, maximus arcade , gameex) and don't have to mess around with soldering up controllers.
and besides there are some nice PC games out there you don't wanna miss (ie bionic command rearmed , abe's ..,braid , sf Iv, hairy harry ,turbo sliders ,..)

Anyway , you'll spend more time setting up front ends and making it as complete as possible then playing on it :)
(for me that's the definition of a front end ---> Operating System you can control when you're really  Old  or  Really drunk )
After all  we all get retarded one day

schol

Hey thanks,
The reason I'll be using an xbox for those cabs is cost.. they're just as gifts for 2 friends and luckily for me they haven't even heard of hyperspin (my fav looking FE btw) !
So just the basic FE for xbox will do just as long as they get to play arcade games, I'm pretty much sure their minds will be blown just as much :p
And they have good pc's themselves to play the latest games on so i'm not worried about missing out on those titles.

Hey, I'm living in Brugge right now going to school in Kortrijk.  I'll be sure to add a post in the project announcements :)
