Wanting to build a narrow, lit button interface
« on: August 12, 2010, 02:52:52 pm »
I'm considering building a button controller for placement between my MSI all-in-one's PC keyboard and its 22 1/2" touchscreen monitor.  The background here is that I really like DWJukebox as a singles-based jukebox app, but it doesn't work with touchscreens except in Windows XP.

What I'd like to end up with...buttons all in a single straight line grouped as follows:

Letter keys (A B C D)
Number keys (1 2 3 4 5 6)
Select key
Left arrow
Right arrow
Coin button

I would very much prefer that all buttons be lighted, small enough to make this practical, and with insert areas where I could put those values into the button rather than a label near the button.  Total length of the button controller would have to be, at most, 21 inches.

Does anyone know a source of buttons that would make this practical?  Or have any advice as to how else I might make a standalone pushbutton controller like this?

I use the PC primarily for music, and really like the old-style singles interface that you can customize in DWJukebox.

Here's what I'll do using standard arcade buttons if I can't find any good backlit solution.  Maybe backlight the legend strip....

With 14 buttons, I should be able to place them within 21 inches of linear space, right?

Groovy Game Gear (Randy) sells button inserts:

Perhaps ask Randy whether he would create custom inserts for you with the text you want it.  His description indicates they can be placed into a button which can be backlit as well.  If he does not offer custom inserts then I would see what you local copy or print store has available.

You probably want smaller buttons then normal PBs.    Sort of like the ones used on the Dream Authentic Katana for jukebox functions.
Not sure if they are backlit.

i went with a stainless momentary button with the numbers etched on them , they have a blue illuminated light but i havent built yet but they look very smart , they are pretty small about 15mm i think , if you interested i can give you the contact , i paid about 10 bucks a button with the etching included which was pretty good ,

they etching is nearly black i cant wait to hook em up

my biggest problem now is sk juke wont work with windows 7  and it was my primary jukebox for button support   :'(

and problem is im not that keen on any other juke (buttons supported)that ive tried and ive tried most now
