2 cabs for a great price, should I do it?
« on: August 06, 2003, 01:48:35 pm »
hey all, I need opinions, and I need them quick :)  I've found a guy who will sell me 2 working cabs (one xmen, one MK3) for a really great price.  I only really need one, even though two is better  ;D , but the price for one isn't as great as two. This guy just wants to get rid of them. Both are working, good monitors, coin door, everything. The MK3 is miising a marquee and 2 buttons, that's about it for both of them as far as anything wrong goes.

Do you think it would be difficult for me to find someone who wants a MK3 cab in NJ? I know that MK3 as a game isn't worth that much, but for a MAME cab, it would work nicely.  I just need opinions, cuz if I don't think I can get rid of the second cab, I'll probably just get the one cab even though it would cost a bit more.

Do it ... I don't know how much he is asking, but you can get some of your cash back selling the boards on eBay.

So just do it ... damn the consequences!

haha, that was also a thought I had. I could feasibly sell the boards, monitor, coin doors serperately if I wanted. I'd like to avoid shipping the cab tho, and also avoid having a cab just sitting in my shed.  But I had thought of that.

I made a FS thread in the Buy/Sell forum. Maybe someone will want it. If anyone makes me an even remotely reasonable offer, they can have it.  I can use more opinions tho, keep em coming :)

I don't understand why nobody likes MK3... ???  I thought it was a sweet game.  Granted, some stuff is kooky, but I loved it!!

BTW..I would get both cabs, especially if the x-men cab is the big version!!

Hell, you could fix up whats wrong with the MK3 cab, then turn and sell it complete for at the very least 300 bucks.

Aceldamor - I liked MK3 also, but I just realize that the cab doesn't go for a whole lot, that's why I said it. I could definitely fix it, like I said, they both work fine. Wiring up 2 buttons and finding a marquee is definitely do-able.

And no, the Xmen isn't the huge cab, its very similar to the Simpsons cab, in fact, it may be the same exact typ of cab as that.  That's fine with me tho, since I couldn't get that monster in my basement :)

I'm thinking I'll do it, now to find someone who wants the cab *wink wink* Go check out my FS thread, you can have it for a good price, haha.

Just for the record mind you neither make good mame cabs.  They don't have standard button layouts and thus you'd have to butcher the control panel to mame them. For every mk cab mamed a person mysteriously disappears and I get another "flower garden" in my back yard.  ;)

Also don't be fooled, if it's not a conversion ANY mk cab is worth a lot of money to collectors as the dedicated versions have the full length sideart, which was rare in that period.  The same goes for the xmen cab, although it's less collectable for some reason.

So please don't hurt those cabs.  Afterall, what did they ever do to you?

Howard - I'm going to build a new CP box anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem.  As far as the MK goes, I'm not sure what it is. It looks like the MK1 cabinet on KLOV, with the front that juts out a bit instead of being flat, but it is a MK3 machine. Now that you mention it, I didn't even look at the side art that much, but I would have sworn that it had full side art.... who knows.

As far as killing the Xmen.... hopefully the arcade gods will forgive me cuz it has a new CP in its future :)

Well all the cabs in the MK series were virtually identical except for artwork.

I know which Xmen machine you are refering to. It's a Konami machine. It's pretty much identical to a Simpsons machine. If it's not the original cab it would make a fine MAME machine, but I haven't seen many Xmen conversions and chances are it is original.

Personally, I think the Xmen cab looks like a cheap predecessor (spelling?) of those nice Midway cabinets. Put side by side they look about the same shape, but the Midway machines (like the MK series) are just so much prettier.

My official opinion:
If you wanna MAME a Midway cabinet go MAME a Blitz.  :P
If you wanna MAME a Konami cabinet go MAME a... well all those side scrollers are good.  :P

There is NOS X-Men sideart on ebay right now. It is cheap too.

the side art on the xmen cab was in pretty good shape from what I saw. I think I'll keep it on there if the other side was just as good. Otherwise, I guess I'll paint it.

I just suggested it because if you opted to keep the game, then it is always good to have a spare of something like that. Who knows, maybe sometime in 2007, you will move the cabinet, and totally rip up one of the sides or something.

That is actually why I stick to cabinets that don't have stickers on them (none of my games do).

As long as my own KI2 cab lasts long enough to sell it. This is the wrong hobby for starving college students...

The MAME machine that started out as $400 is about to end up costing me over $850! (and that's before artwork)

It's always that way.  My cab cost me $300 originally... then it was an upgrade here, an upgrade there... I'm probably in at about $900 now, and I still don't have a lot of the stuff I've bought integrated into the game yet!  I'm actually tempted to sell the base cabinet and build again from scratch to support a rotating CP...
