Rowe R-81 redone
« on: July 31, 2010, 01:08:02 am »
so over the past weekend i was able to get a 1977 Rowe R-81 jukebox. I got it from a friends father in-law for $100 dollars. It was sitting in his shed under some tools and other things and i was loooking at it just to see what it looks like and he said i could buy it off him so i did. We got it back to my house and the main problem was that the speakers were old and they just sounded terrible and it needed some cleaning up. Here is a picture with the front off of it.

The first think i wanted to do why i got home i decided to put in new speakers in the top and bottom. I started to take apart the bottom grill and i had gotten two brand new 10 inch Memphis speakers and it did need them as you can tell. Once i had put the new speakers in i started to work on the top speakers. The bad news was i didn't have any speakers that would fit the holes where it the old ones were. I decided to upgrade the speakers to two 6x9 inch speakers.

I had to do some wood working to give the 6x9's a place to sit in the jukebox. I decided to pick the Dual brand of 6x9 speaker because it has led that shine blue when hooked up to a 12 volt source. But the speaker grill didn't let alot of the light shine so the next step was to make a new one. I had a piece of black speaker grill that i cut out to fit perfect in the place of the other ones. But i am thinking about getting a piece of sliver speaker grill to make it look as close to original as i can. But i do like the way the blue is on the black.

Next i decided to make new labels for the records. I found a free software to do it online and i was able to get it all done in about 1 hour. After i got the labels done then i was thinking that i need something on the bottom to make it pop where the subs are. So i went to walmart to see if they had anything that would be nice and i found light strips and i figured that they would be nice on the jukebox since they are blue and green like all the lights on the jukebox. I think i made a great decision on buying the machine for $100 dollars. Now is to find some nice 45's to put in the jukebox and start the party.

I have run into a problem and i was wondering if anybody knows how to fix it. My nine is not working but when i open the top and press on the harness that the key bad plugs into the nine will work. Also the buttons sometimes repeat them self. Meaning that sometimes when i press a number once it enters it twice and would like to fix that problem thank you for any help you can give.

Hello Roberts123,

Sorry I don't know your name.

The problems you have is two fold, more than likely you have dry joints (cold joints in the USA) on your boards, if you can solder correctly then check all the boards from the power supply upwards. The problem will more than likely be on the Selector Logic Board.
All the boards on your jukebox contain some CMOS chips so static precautions must be followed.

The other double stiking of the keys is down to the fact that the switches on the keyboard need replacements.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while i just haven't had the time to fix the jukebox. But anyways I have found out what was wrong with the double sticking buttons and i have fixed it. But now the next problem on the list is that when i turn up the volume it gets really really old. It is either really loud or you can't hear anything and I want to fix it. So any help will be thanked and also I have moved my jukebox down to the basement. The start of the man cave is on its way. I have started a new project and it is a touch screen jukebox I will have to post pictures and updates. Thank you again for the help.

Hello,

Have you replaced the volume control? It sould be a 10k log pot.

If the sound is two loud for you reduce the sound output by moving the speakers down on the tappings of the output package, Full sound is on the E6 connections (or if yours has a rotary switch on it turn it down from 32 watts to 16 or 8 etc) reduce it to say E4.

I am sorry to say but I am thinking about selling the jukebox to get a new truck.  I love this thing to death but I must let it go. I figured the best place to start to sell it is here since I know it will go to someone who loves jukeboxes. If you like it send me a pm and I will respond with with everything on it and if any questions just ask in the pm. Thank you.

Post it in the Buy/Sell/Trade section.  I think it's worth $300 to $400 in it's current condition.

Great news!!! Got a new truck without selling the juke. So for awhile I was cleaning and fixing up the new truck but now it's time for business. I am taking the juke all apart cleaning/painting it all and re running the wiring. I ran into a problem with the juke before I even started. I was playing a song and when the song ended it did its normal thing by picking up the record and it goes around once but the promblem is it doesn't stop spinning (meaning the spindle where all the record are.) What could have caused this to happen????????

Hi,

Check out that it is not a mechanical problem where the lever that engages the sprag wheel has not come out of its guide.

If the above is not the case then you may have have a problem with the mechanism control unit, the memory unit or the encoder (check out the two bottom wipers, these wear the most).
